MULLAN — It was a fun weekend of basketball on the east side of Shoshone County as Mullan hosted their annual seventh- and eighth-grade tournaments.

Tournament organizer and Mullan School District Athletic Director Stetson Spooner thought the event was an overwhelming success and credited the teams, the fans, his volunteers and the Mullan community for the positive response.

“This was one of the smoothest run tourneys since I have been here,” Spooner said. “The fans from around North Idaho and mostly from the valley were incredible. The competitiveness of the junior high athletes was on full display with some really great games too. All in all this was a great day.”

The Kellogg girls seventh-grade team won the girls’ bracket with dominant performances throughout.

Spooner was particularly impressed with their play and thought they reminded him of Kellogg’s most recent graduating class.

“The Kellogg girls seventh A team is seemingly untouchable,” Spooner said. “From starters to the bench, it seems like a female version of the Tyler Gibbons/Chase Jerome boys AAU and high school squads from years past.”

The Lakeside boys took home the boys’ championship with solid performances all daylong.

Spooner said the most exciting game of the tournament happened early when Wallace took on St. Regis. “The St. Regis boys and Wallace eighth-grade boys had a phenomenal battle early in the day,” Spooner said. “St. Regis seventh-grader Jonathan Pruitt and Wallace eighth-grader Brad Tesky battled late to go into overtime in a thriller that ended with St. Regis coming out on top.” Pruitt also won the boys’ free throw contest with Kellogg seventh-grader Macey Jerome taking home the girls’ title.

“This tournament was a success in large part due to the great officials we had, Hunter Gust, Zayne Hunter, Mike Ebert, Paul Elston and Ken Dykes did an amazing job for us,” Spooner said.
