KELLOGG — The annual Kellogg High School school spirit festival known as Brawl for the Ball is right around the corner and students are looking for their community to step up.

The rivalry week between Kellogg and St. Maries high schools has been notoriously one-sided in the community support realm (favoring St. Maries), while the Wildcats have had a slight edge over the years in the basketball aspect.

This year, the students and staff at KHS are hoping to see the community service side of the scale tip in favor of the Wildcats.

“We’re trying to go all out this year,” KHS leadership teacher Kelton Enich said. “We’re trying to make it a big community support event. But St. Maries blows us out of the water each year during the food drive and it’s because there are so many businesses down there that do things like match each other’s donations or they have competitions between different entities to see who can raise the most food. We want to see our businesses and community step up to meet their challenge.”

The students at KHS are already in full swing of competition, bringing in nonperishable items as part of their fourth period class competition.

Last year, the Kellogg High School community did better than they had in previous years during the food drive, raising more than 4,000 pounds of food, but then it was revealed that St. Maries had raised more than 14,000 pounds of food themselves.

“We are setting a goal of 15,000 pounds of food,” Enich said. “We know it’s pretty lofty, but we are hoping to see some support from the community.”

Right now there are several businesses already doing food drives including Yokes, Shoshone Glass, Silver Mountain and Nathan Wendt’s Office, but they are looking for more businesses to do food drives of their own and to even challenge some of their fellow businesses to match their donations.

On Wednesday, Jan. 30 there will be a community fundraiser and food drive event at the Dirty Dog Saloon (formerly Dirty Ernies).

KHS associated student body president Jaymee Sheppard is hoping the event can be a unifying event for the school and the community.

“I just want to see a lot of people at the event and I want to see everyone come out to support the community,” Sheppard said. “I want people to see how excited we are and get excited with us. We’re giving back to the community, they support us so much and we want to be able to give back to the community however we can.”

Kellogg students will have a week full of special dress up days beginning on Jan. 28:

Jan. 28 — Under the Sea

Jan. 29 — Twin/Duo

Jan. 30 — Western

Jan. 31 — Fantasy (dress like your favorite character from a fantasy book/movie)

Feb. 1 — St. Maries Mock (wear green and gold/lumberjack attire)

Food can be dropped off at KHS, Kellogg Middle School, or any of the aforementioned businesses.

Brawl for the Ball is Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning with the girls junior varsity basketball game at 11 a.m. and continues with multiple events throughout the afternoon.
