Wallace boys basketball
PLUMMER — The Wallace Miners stayed perfect and withstood a tough test on the road against the Knights, topping Lakeside 73-67 on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Further details were not available.
Wallace 66, Mullan 21: Zack Welch scored 13 points to lead the Miners past the Tigers in a Friday, Jan. 11, North Star League game at the Mullan Pavilion.
Wallace led 35-8 at the half before taking their feet off the gas in the second half.
Ryan Perno scored 11 points for Wallace while Riley Trogden scored 11 points for Mullan.

St. Maries 65, Kellogg 57: Strong inside play from Dan Howard, a second-quarter scoring spree by Eli Gibson and solid free-throw shooting down the stretch helped the host Lumberjacks hold off the Wildcats on Jan. 7 for a nonconference win.
Gibson, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard, scored 12 of his game high 19 points in the second quarter, helping St. Maries extend a two-point advantage to a 31-22 halftime lead.
Howard, a 6-4 post, shot 8-for-8 from the field to score all 16 points inside, Lumberjacks coach Bryan Chase said.
“We definitely had a game plan to try and get the ball inside,” Chase said. “Kellogg slowed us down in the second half with some double- and triple- teams, but he (Howard) had a nice game.”
Kellogg cut the lead to 62-57 late in the game, but St. Maries shot 15-for-23 from the foul line.
Graden Nearing had 17 points to lead Kellogg.

Bonners Ferry 64, Kellogg 43: A streak of 45 straight wins over IML opponents for the Wildcats came to an end Saturday night in Bonners Ferry. No further information was received.
Mullan boys basketball
Kootenai 51, Mullan 38: Gage Maitland scored 13 points and Triston Usdrowski added 12 points for the Warriors in a Jan. 8 North Star League win over the visiting Tigers.
“We got set up in a half-court press and got a few steals out of that early on,” Kootenai coach Mike Maitland said. “We were a little flat tonight and missed quite a few shots. We came out in a funk for a little bit and it was probably our most helter skelter game we’ve played this year.”
Luke Trogden scored 13 points for Mullan who can blame the loss on a slow start as they fell behind 26-15 by halftime.

Kellogg 56, Priest River 27: Hailey Cheney had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats in a Jan. 8 win over the Spartans at Andrews Gymnasium. Taeya Sheppard scored 10 points for Kellogg.
The Wildcats overcame some stagnant offense, but were able to pull out a big league opening win.

Timberlake 57, Kellogg 26: The chance was there, the Wildcats seemed to have found the answer to Timberlake juggernaut, but then it vanished.
Playing the Jan. 10 game with three of their regular guard and wing rotation either sick or suspended, Kellogg began the game in defensive lockdown mode, but then as shots stopped going in, so to did the defensive intensity.
Trailing 12-8 after the first quarter, Kellogg would only muster 18 points the rest of the way.
The Wildcats did have a silver lining in their defeat as they used their size advantage to keep the Tigers’ Brooke Jessen in check with only 10 points.

Bonners Ferry 46, Kellogg 41: The Wildcats dropped their second league game in three days on Saturday, Jan. 12, as they couldn’t close the gap late against the host Badgers. No further information was received.

Lakeside 51, Wallace 41: Tommia Pakootas made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points as the visiting Knights topped the Miners in a Jan. 8 North Star League game.
Lakeside outscored Wallace 18-9 in the third quarter, after the game was tied at 14 following a slow-paced first half.
Skylar Hill scored 15 points for Wallace, 11 of them in the final quarter.
“This was a great game for us,” coach Nichole Farkas said. “We had to 41-43, but we had to foul and the score just stretched out on us. Sarah Johnson played one of her strongest games ever for us with six points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.”

A scary moment late in the third quarter saw Skylar Hill collide with St. Maries’ Madison Cordell resulting in a severe concussion and delaying the game by nearly a half an hour.

KELLOGG — The Wildcats hosted wrestlers from Kootenai, Lake City, Wallace, Sandpoint and St. Maries on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Andrews Gymnasium.
Kellogg’s Dakota Eixenberger (106), Wyatt Hei (113), Ethan Guy (120), Rob Bublitz (285) all picked up wins for the Wildcats, but Sandpoint proved to be too much for them to handle.
“Sandpoint did a good job being more physical than us, which took us out of our matches in places,” KHS coach Scott Miller said. “It's a good lesson for a young team that we have to do a better job fighting through busy hands.”
River City Duals
POST FALLS — The short-staffed Wildcats performed admirably at the River City Duals last weekend at Post Falls High School.
The Wildcats went 1-4 as a team during pod play and then in the bronze bracket, but their team record isn’t indicative of how well they wrestled at the event, coach Scott Miller said.
“I thought we wrestled well this weekend,” Miller said. “We won our head-to-head matchups but unfortunately we had too many forfeits due to some injuries and illnesses.”
Austin McKinnon, Dakota Eixenberger, Mike Senteney, Ethan Guy, and Austin Stepro were Kellogg’s standout grapplers, with McKinnon finishing the weekend undefeated.
“Austin McKinnon had an excellent weekend, pinning all five opponents he faced,” Miller said. “I also thought that Dakota Eixenberger and Austin Stepro had strong performances this weekend and Ethan Guy continues to be very impressive. Mike Senteney was outstanding all weekend and is on a hot streak. Overall every one of our wrestlers had outstanding moments and we continue to see improvement in each of out kids. Fortunately we should be more healthy this upcoming week for our IML match with Timberlake.”
