Manon Harris, 89

Sept. 24, 1929 – Jan. 18, 2019

Manon Harris, of Osburn, Idaho, passed away of heart failure in Rose Lake, Idaho.

Manon married Norman Harris in 1972 in Taylor, Mich. In 1974, the happy couple moved to Rose Lake to begin a new chapter in their lives and to be close to her daughter, Gloria and her family. Norman was the love of her life and they did everything together; traveled, built a business — ‘MANON’S CAFÉ’ and raised Norman’s young son, Derrick. They were very involved in their church and community activities. They loved living in the Pacific Northwest, and enjoyed all their family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Gloria Marie Shelton Palmer, JoAnne Shelton Clark of New York City and Susan Harris Muha; her sons, Michael David Shelton of Plymouth, Mich., Gerald Allen Shelton “Jerry” of West Richland, Wash., and Derrick Harris of Detroit, Mich.

Her youngest daughter, Francine D. Shelton, perished in 1969, at the age of 6 in Taylor; and Norman’s son, Steven Harris, perished in Detroit as a young man.

She is survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Manon was born in Detroit, but raised in Mexico City by her paternal grandmother. She returned to Detroit at the age of 15. She did not speak English and suffered poor eyesight, so therefore had a difficult time in high school. But she overcame these obstacles and became very successful in her life’s work.

Manon was very active and hardworking. As a young woman in Detroit, she raised a family of five children while she worked at Burroughs Corporation for almost 20 years and also worked weekends at her cousin’s restaurant, The Mexican Village. After moving to Idaho, she and Norman built and managed MANON’S CAFÉ in Rose Lake. In her later years, she became a nursing assistant employed at the Mountain Valley Care and Rehab Center in Kellogg, Idaho.

She will be interned at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash. A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at Community Bible Church in Pinehurst, 210 Main St., Pinehurst, Idaho.
