Edmund Ed Joseph Renkey Jr., 79
Edmund Joseph Renkey Jr., 79, of Kellogg, Idaho passed away on July 5, 2019. He was born May 19, 1940 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Ed was the son of Edmund Sr. and Rose Renkey.
Ed graduated in 1958 from Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He continued his education at St. Vincent College and then on to the Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
He was a Mechanical Engineer with several major companies until joining Westinghouse at the Hanford Site. Ed worked on several projects involving nuclear energy throughout his illustrious career until his retirement in 1996.
After his retirement, Ed moved from Richland, Washington to the Silver Valley to be near the mountains because he was an avid skier. In addition, he enjoyed cycling where it was not unusual for him to bike thirty miles in a day. Since the Trail of the Coeur d’ Alenes was one of his favorite rides, he was very active with the Coeur d’ Alene Tribe Recreation Management. Ed also had a passion for cars, owning a fully restored 1965 Ford Mustang and a De Tomaso Pantera.
In Ed’s opinion, TV’s sole purpose was to watch sports and he subscribed to all the sports networks. His favorite teams were the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers (his recumbent trike was black and gold with a Steeler pennant flying from the frame). Over the years, he drove or flew East to participate in the annual Family and Friends tailgate parties in Happy Valley to cheer on the Nittany Lions!
Ed is survived by his brother, Thomas (Mahala) Renkey of Malvern, Pennsylvania; his sister, Rose Ann Battista of Hartly, Delaware; his nephew Michael Renkey; and his niece Rebecca (Travis Erickson) Battista. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Sr. and Rose; as well as his brother-in-law, William G. Battista.
