KELLOGG — Lace up your hightops and head for the blacktop folks — it’s time for Silverhoops 2019.

The 26th edition of the popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament is this weekend and it’s already looking like it will be the biggest one ever.

“We have over 130 teams registered this year, which is more than we’ve had the last two tournaments,” said Mallory Phillips, Silver Valley Chamber director.

It was just a few years ago that the tournament had its biggest turnout yet with 127 teams and this year’s edition has already passed that mark with teams still coming in (as of Monday morning).

All estimates show that more than 2,100 people will cram themselves into the courts next to Teeters Field, as well as the Kellogg Swimming Pool parking lot to try their hand at becoming a Silver Hoops champion, but there are a few changes coming this year.

Unlike previous years where the tournament begins on Saturday and ends on Sunday, this year Saturday will be all about pool play, with the tournament portion of the event beginning on Sunday and being single-elimination format.

“Saturday’s games will help us determine seeding for the tournament on Sunday,” Phillips said. "Plus, this ensures that everyone has a chance to play both days. It keeps folks here longer which is good for our vendors and other local businesses."

Games will kick off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the slam dunk competition kicking off midway through the day.

For those who are not playing, there will be plenty of things to do throughout the day with several vendors along the trail, the pool will be open and free to enter, and as always, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities for those looking to get involved.

“We could always use help with court monitors, picking up trash, and lots of other odds and ends,” Phillips said.
