Trail 802 closed for reconstruction and improvements
COEUR d’AlENE – A section of the Huckleberry Trail 802 (see map) near Fernan Saddle on the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District has been temporarily closed to protect public health and safety as operations begin to reconstruct the trail. Concerns with the amount of OHV use on Trail 802 while heavy equipment is operating in the area warranted the closure. The closure includes Huckleberry Trail 802 from the junction with the CDA Deception Creek Road 612, along Windy Ridge to the junction with Forest Service Road 206 and Railroad Grade (starts at the end of Ohio Match Road) at Burnt Cabin Summit. The closure is expected to be in effect for up to three weeks.
Additional road reconstruction work is planned later this summer that will impact travel in the Huckleberry Mountain, Windy Ridge and Burnt Cabin Saddle area on Forest Service Roads 406 and 206. The Forest Service asks for patience and support while travel is impacted. Upcoming activities in the area include commercial timber harvest activities and associated activities to improve the resiliency of the forest and to improve watershed conditions.
The Bottom Canyon Project was proposed in response to findings of the 2012 Idaho Panhandle National Forests (IPNF) Integrated Vegetation and Fuels 5-Year Action Plan, a collaborative effort to identify priority areas on the IPNF based on wildland urban interface, restoration potential, forest health, and/or timber suitability. For more information on the project or operations, please contact the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger Station at (208) 664-2318.
