Lady Miners putting in work early

WALLACE — The Wallace Lady Miners Volleyball Team hosted their annual summer skills camp with the University of Idaho earlier this week.
Vandal coach Brian Lamppa was there to run through several drills with the 27 players that turned out for the camp.
New Wallace head coach Katie Bauer is excited to see players turning out so early in the summer break and hopes that their drive will pick right back up when the season begins.
“We had 27 girls show up, 10 from Mullan, ranging in age from sixth grade up to seniors,” Bauer said. “I was happy with all who showed up.”
Teams attend camps like these every year, but this one is unique because Wallace was able to get the coaches to come to them and put it on inside their own gym.
While most volleyball practices during a season are getting ready for games, this camp was designed to work on fundamentals and things that may get missed in a standard practice.
“They were breaking down skills a lot more than we can do during the regular season,” Bauer said. “They were doing a lot of fundamentals, which is good for everyone to see, especially coaching because it can help you see a different style.”
Getting players in the gym during the summer break can be a challenge, but as with most coaches, they want to see dedication from their players if they expect to make a team once the regular season rolls around.
“We are trying to get more summer stuff in,” Bauer said. “We have a team camp coming up, as well as a tournament next month in St. Regis. After that, it’s the no contact time until the season begins.”
Lady Miner Team camp is slated for July 8-10, and the St. Regis Tournament is scheduled for July 12.
