St. Joe Ranger District opens roads for personal-use firewood cutting

ST. MARIES – The St. Joe Ranger District has opened Forest Service Roads (FSR) 1235, 1236, 1950, 1955, and 3748 for personal-use firewood gathering through the end of August. The 1950, 1955, and 3748 roads are located approximately four miles southeast of Emida, Idaho (see map).

The 1235 and 1236 roads are located approximately four miles south of Avery, Idaho off of Kelly Creek Road 1237 (see map). The lower section of Kelly Creek Road 1237, from the St. Joe River to the three-mile marker, remains closed for the protection of public health and safety from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday) due to logging operations traffic. Access is still available on the upper portion of Kelly Creek Road 1237 from FSR 201.

A Personal Use Firewood Permit is required to cut firewood on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests.

“Firewood gathering is important for the communities within and adjacent to the St. Joe Ranger District,” said District Ranger Matt Davis. “Many homes in this area augment their winter heating needs through the collection of firewood.”
