SANDPOINT — The Easy Rider’s 4-H club recently competed in horse bowl competitions at the county level and were selected for the county junior and senior team.

The Horse Bowl competition is a quick response answer competition focused around all aspects of horses, such as colors and markings to the digestive system, teeth, anatomy, reproduction, feeds and much more.

This accumulated knowledge is tested in the form of a contest, similar to a “College Quiz Bowl” competition.

During the contest the 4-H’ers must work together with three other team members to answer questions to the best of their ability.

The knowledge and skills gained in the participation of this project are carried on to all other aspects and projects of the 4-H Horse program, such as Horse Judging and Hippology, and possibly into the career or work field.

Aleah Philp did not compete on the Horse Bowl, but impressed with a near-perfect score with her expert demonstration on how to groom your horse, which she will advance onto the state competition.

She identified grooming tools — describing and demonstrating how to use the tools. Her demonstration also focused on safety and why it is important to groom your horse.

Aleah placed second, and only two points from a perfect score, which shows just how competitive this competition was.

As mentioned, both the county junior and senior teams qualified for the state competition. Local members Cara Griffin, Dakota Hoch and Malena Munoz qualified for the junior team; and Jaden House qualified for the senior team. These ladies will co-op with the team from Kootenai County at the state competition.

“These kids have worked hard preparing at meetings and independently,” said Leslee Stanley, Easy Riders 4-H leader. “They did great competing with Kootenai County to earn a spot on the team, then at districts for their spot to go to state. I’m very proud of them.”

The Easy Rider’s 4-H club would like to invite everyone to breakfast at the Smelterville Lions building from 7-10 a.m. to help raise funds to cover their state competition travel expenses.

The 4-H Horse Bowl and State Competition will be held July 1 in Rigby.
