SILVER VALLEY – With the end of the 2018-2019 school year on the horizon, high school seniors from the three local school districts are counting the days until graduation.

While the freedom that comes with graduating high school is what these students are most likely looking forward to, embracing that freedom with a little extra cash certainly doesn’t hurt either.

This week, Kellogg, Wallace, and Mullan High Schools held their yearly scholarship ceremonies to recognize the hard work of their seniors and help give them a running start going into whatever they wish to pursue.

Requirements/qualifications for these scholarships vary from person to person and group to group. While many recognize exceptional scholastic and athletic achievement, other awards are more specific to organizations that the seniors were members of or have made a pledge to join after high school.

Between the three schools, the combined 2019 senior classes received close to half-a-million dollars in scholarship funds and awards (approximately 494,378, not including Mullan alumni).

Leading the pack this year was Kellogg High School with $274,787 being given out to 26 different Wildcat seniors.

Kellogg High School councilor Elana Estill looks forward to the ceremony every year.

“The scholarship ceremony is without a doubt one of my favorite days of the school year,” she said. “We get to see the hard work from every senior pay off and we also get to meet the many local and state donors that are consistently so generous to our students. It truly is a magical day and I couldn’t be more proud! “

At Wallace Jr./Sr. High School, an impressive $153,355 was handed out to 29 senior Miners.

“The amount of money that was given to students is a real testament to the community of Wallace,” WHS principal Chris Lund said of contributions. “It proves this community cares about creating bright futures for its kids.”

Then at Mullan Jr./Sr. High School, $66,236 went to the four Tiger seniors.

MHS principal Don Kotschevar was pleased with the generous amount given to the seniors.

“Students in Mullan are very fortunate so many successful past graduates have given them this opportunity to continue their education.” he said. “How many schools give in excess of $10,000 per graduate that wants it?”
