KELLOGG — The Kellogg Public Swimming pool has some pretty good things going for it.

The pool recently received a slight facelift as local students added some new artwork to the outside of the pool facility and to the inside of the pool itself.

“I was talking to Jan Bayer about doing some type of artwork on the plain white walls,” City of Kellogg superintendent Craig Lewis said. “She said she would get some kids to do it for me.”

Enlisting the help of Bayer’s Kellogg Middle School art department, the murals on the outside were completed which make the building look much more inviting, as well as the shark mural on the floor of the pool’s 5 foot (depth) section, which should add some adrenaline-fueled fun this summer for swimmers.

Bayer was just happy to give the students a project that would benefit their community.

“Thank you (City of Kellogg) for the opportunity for our students to serve our community,” Bayer said. “We had a blast!”

The Kellogg Public Swimming pool will once again be free to the public this summer.

Historically the pool has always charged a dollar for a full day of swimming, but in light of current construction going on around the city, officials thought making the pool free for everyone to use would be the best course of action.

“With all of the construction we have going on we thought giving the kids a place to be for free would benefit the whole community,” said City of Kellogg public works superintendent Craig Lewis. “Anyone who wants to come in, it’ll be free swimming for everybody.”

Safety issues were a key factor and the city saw this as a proactive attempt to help the construction companies minimize some of the usual worries that come with such a large scale project like the Kellogg Sewer Project.

“The city decided to again absorb the cost for the year,” said Lewis. “We want people to know that we are trying to help out however we can and that the public will have a fun and safe place to be during the construction.”

The construction is nearing its completion which could mean that this is the final year of free swimming.

Expectations are that the pool will be open in June as long as lifeguards are found and trained, for more information contact the City of Kellogg at (208) 786-9131.
