Wallace School District Trustee James McMillan

| November 1, 2019 2:11 PM

James McMillan is seeking election to the position of trustee for Wallace School District No. 393 Zone 3.

McMillan is challenging incumbent Anna Berger and challenger Sam Lavigne.

He is a Wallace High School graduate and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science in 2003 and his Juris Doctorate in 2006 from the University of Idaho.

McMillan would be new to the School Board, but is not new to being active in local government.

“I have lived in the area since 1997, and have always had an active interest in getting involved in public affairs,” McMillan said. “I am currently the Vice-Chair of the Shoshone County Planning and Zoning Commission, and past Vice-Chair of the Silver Valley Economic Development Corporation, as well as a current board member of the Wallace Chamber of Commerce.”

McMillan is married with four children, three of whom attend the WSD, which is part of his decision to seek election to this position.

“I have a vested interest as both a parent and a taxpayer in ensuring that our schools provide the resources needed to our students, while making sure our tax dollars are spent as efficiently as possible,” McMillan said.

McMillan believes that fiscal responsibility, transparency, and being a stakeholder as a parent and taxpayer are the key issues in this election.

“I would like to restore the public comment period at our monthly meetings, as well as allow for comment by our student body officers on issues of concern for our students,” McMillan said. “Also, I would like to prioritize funding for the classroom, as opposed to further increases for administrative officials, who are already fairly compensated. Finally, when requesting a levy, I would like to require that each item that the levy is proposed to cover be listed, with a specific dollar amount, and the total being the amount of the levy, as opposed to the past practice of simply listing a non-exclusive list of items the levy may cover, without any breakdown of the cost.”
