Fun times at Pinehurst Elementary

PINEHURST — Students at Pinehurst Elementary School have been busy lately, whether it’s field trips or life size board games.
In late October, the first-grade classes took a trip to Hidden Acres Farms in Green Bluff, where they were able to experience the life of a farmer.
“They got a tour of the apple orchard and learned about the trees and picked an apple,” said teacher Stephanie Ivie. “They also rode a hay wagon pulled by a tractor, got to see some farm animals, picked a pumpkin, found their way through a tire maze and enjoyed a snack of pumpkin doughnuts and apple cider.”
The event was funded by the PTA, whom Ivie and her fellow first-grade teachers would like to thank, as well as the bus drivers and Hidden Acres for being well organized and making a fun experience for the kids.
In other Pinehurst news, fifth-grade parent Monica Desmarais found out about an exciting grant opportunity and took it to fourth-grade teachers Eli Bourgard and Michel McKinnon who pounced on the opportunity.
The grant, through Figpickels Toy Emporium, was for $450 that provided a giant chess set and katamino boards for the fourth-grade classrooms.
Katamino is a puzzle game with both 2D and 3D challenges of progressive difficulty, and a strategic game challenge for two players.
“Monica Desmarais (parent to fifth-graders Bodie and Gage Desmarais) found out about the grant and let Mrs. McKinnon and I know about it,” Bourgard said. “She had already raised some money for us as the equipment was more than the grant amount. We got the grant paperwork turned in this fall and received the grant. The fourth-graders were very excited when they saw the chess set and katamino boards set up in their classrooms.”
