Brawl for the Ball food drive is underway

KELLOGG — Students at Kellogg High School are looking for some help in hopes of pulling off something BIG.
During last year’s Brawl for the Ball spirit competition, Kellogg High School raised 22,000 pounds of food to be donated to local food banks and this year they want to beat their own record.
KHS’s Leadership Class has taken on the role of organizing the Kellogg side of the events and Sierra Keele is part of this year’s class getting the event set to go.
“Something we are striving for Brawl this year is to surpass our food drive total from last year,” Keele said. “The tremendous effort of the community and school brought us together for a great win. We want to continue to grow the spirit and pride of Kellogg this year.”
This year’s event will be at St. Maries High School, so the victory would be even sweeter on the road, but that is part of the beauty of the event.
It takes two competitive groups and has them working toward a cooperative goal.
“We are all looking forward to the competitive spirit of the event,” Keele said. “Brawl unifies our school together for one purpose. It is amazing to see what we are capable of when we all want to win.”
Much like years past, each school will pick a local charity and hold a 50/50 raffle where the winner gets half the proceeds and the charity receives the other.
This year, a very important local organization will be on the receiving end of the fundraiser and Keele and company will be looking to really beef up their efforts.
“A specific goal our school needs to focus on this year is the 50/50 raffle. We hope to involve the community in this better, like we have with the food drive,” Keele said. “This year we are donating the proceeds of the 50/50 raffle to the S.A.V.E. coalition. There is a high rate of suicide in our community, and the S.A.V.E coalition has assembled a group of diverse individuals that specialize in mental and behavioral health in order to address this serious situation. They will utilize our donations by paying for their voucher system (when someone is in crisis and needs to speak to a professional, but they don’t have the funds to do so), and paying for training of people to help individuals that are actively suicidal.”
Food donations can be made at the school and students are selling 50/50 raffle tickets already.
Brawl for the Ball will be held on Jan. 11, at St. Maries High School.
