It's time to support the Tatas!
WALLACE — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one local group has continued to show their love for tatas through good times and crafting.
Tatas Party 2019 is this Saturday and event organizer Aubrey Stovern is excited for another fun night of fundraising for the Shoshone Cancer Resource Center and their Shoshone Cancer Support Corp.
Headed into its eighth year of existence, Stovern and her group have donated thousands of dollars to the SCSC, which is great because 100% of the money being donated stays in Shoshone County and is used to help Shoshone County residents.
The fundraiser has become well-known for the specialty crafted bras that are donated to the auction for people to bid on — among other things. These bras range in creativity from chain mail to being able to be used as planting pots.
“We love the creativity that we see from all the bras that get donated,” Stovern said.
It’s also an affordable fundraiser for folks who want to come out and maybe don’t have a huge amount of money, but still want to participate in an auction-style fundraiser.
“We don’t want anyone to ever come and feel like they didn’t get to do or buy anything,” Stovern said. “We want everyone who comes to have a good time and have lots of opportunities to bid on and win something.”
Over the last few years, this fundraiser has brought in some serious money, which is vital to the survival of SCSC.
SCSC provide $25 vouchers for any type of cancer patient living in Shoshone County. These vouchers go toward gas — to get to and from doctor appointments — or to help cover prescription costs.
Since the beginning of 2017 and with the conclusion of 2019, SCSC will have given out roughly $75,000 in just vouchers to local cancer patients.
In 2017, they had 55 patients use 1,022 vouchers totaling $25,550. In 2018, they had 56 patients use 961 vouchers totaling $24,025. So far in 2019 — as of August — they had already given out 602 vouchers for $15,050.
“We all know a family, friend or neighbor who is battling some form of cancer,” Stovern said. “It's nice to know with all that they are dealing with, that they do not have to come up with gas money for treatment, or get a little help on the very expensive medications they need to survive.”
Stovern would like to thank her committee — which includes Bonnie Slater, April Angle, Jessica Marks and Kelsey Shultz — for helping organize and promote the event with her.
Tatas Party 2019 is 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Wallace Inn.
