Kellogg volleyball

BONNERS FERRY — The Wildcats are unbeaten in Intermountain League play and they continued their run of dominance with a destruction of Bonners Ferry last Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Making short work of the Badgers in three quick sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-19), the Wildcats were paced by senior Cierra Brandt, who had 16 kills.

It was once again Kellogg’s immense size advantage up front that really made a difference in the match.

“Cierra was our powerhouse tonight,” coach Steph Brunner said. “Hailey Cheney respectively put up an additional 11 kills and two aces while Sam Bryant had a great night at the net for us too.”

Later that week the Wildcats made the trip over to Holy Family School where they ran through Coeur d’Alene Charter for a second time this season (25-19, 25-18, 25-10) on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Kellogg’s back row players decided it was their turn to shine as Chloe Wilbur, Piper Ranio, and Erin Van Hoose all made a significant impact for the Wildcats passing the ball, keeping the Panthers at bay from the service line.

However, it was Grace Nearing and Caitlin Wendt who really showed out for Kellogg.

“Grace was amazing from the service line and so was Caitlin,” Brunner said. “They created large gaps for us. Grace also made sure we kept the ball in our court or got it back quickly for us if we were struggling by strategically dumping.”

Mullan 44, Clark Fork 40

CLARK FORK — The Tigers ended their two-game skid with a big win over Clark Fork on the road to get back into the W column.

And it wasn’t easy — or pretty.

With five seconds remaining Mullan quarterback Caleb Ball ran the ball 30 yards to score the game-winning touchdown for the Tigers.

Mullan coach Stetson Spooner was pretty shocked with the way the game played out, especially considering the absolute drubbing Mullan gave the Wampus Cats a few weeks ago.

“They say a win’s a win and my gosh that's true tonight,” Spooner said. “First off as a fan of football, the adjustments that Coach Arthun and his staff made and the level of physicality Clark Fork brought tonight was incredible in comparison to the first game of the year. What an absolute dog fight.

“Big time players make big time plays and our guys did just enough when it mattered to come out on top. What an incredible football game and I’m happy to be a part of the success that this team has.”

Mullan hosts Wallace this Thursday at 3 p.m. for homecoming.

Mullan d. Kootenai

MULLAN — The host Tigers swept the Warriors 3-0 in North Star League play on Oct. 1. No other information was available.

Mullan d. Lakeside

MULLAN — The Tigers held off the Knights in five sets on Oct. 3 in North Star League play at the Mullan Pavilion, winning 25-20, 16-25, 17-25, 25-21, 13-15.

“This was an absolutely great team effort and a huge win for us,” coach Dawn McKinnon said.

Mullan was led by Jessica Curry with eight assists, Talowa Fallingwater with eight kills and three blocks and Emily Dykes with 14 aces.

POST FALLS — The Lady Miners ran through the Jaguars during their match last week, winning with a clean sweep 25-10, 25-10, 25-11 on Oct. 1.

Skylar Hill had 16 aces for the Miners, while Riley Valley picked up 11 assists.

PLUMMER — Tucker Sanchez threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Knights rolled past the visiting Miners on Friday, Oct. 4.

“It was a good team effort,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “We were kind of short-handed this week, with a couple kids sick. But the 10 we suited up played really well.”

Jayson Hall opened the scoring with a 23-yard run midway through the first quarter, and also returned an interception for a touchdown for Lakeside (4-0).

Alberto Arroyo had more than 100 yards rushing, nearly 100 yards receiving and two scores for the Knights, who travel to Clark Fork next week.

Quarterback Logan Hull had a touchdown run for Wallace (0-5), which faces Mullan-St. Regis on Thursday.

KELLOGG — The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans battled back and had a shot to tie it at the end before the Wildcats held strong and won a big Intermountain League match on Oct. 2.

GRANGEVILLE — The Wildcats went on the road to face the Bulldogs of Grangeville last week.

The Wildcats are 1-2 against the Central Idaho League and will now move into their own Intermountain League schedule with their homecoming game this Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Priest River.
