Air support needed to rescue injured hiker

AVERY – A Two Bear Air rescue helicopter was called in to assist local search crews on Sunday after a hiker was injured in the southern part of Shoshone County.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office reports that on October 13 at approximately 6:21 p.m., 911 dispatch was notified of a potential search and rescue event located in the Elk Peak area of Avery, Idaho.

According to the reporting party, Misty Curtis, 39, had suffered a broken leg while on a hike from the Lucky Swede trailhead. Her approximate location was two miles from the trailhead by ATV, with an additional two hour hike from the ATV.

The SCSO St. Joe resident deputy, along with St. Joe EMS, worked on coordinating a rescue plan; however, due to Curtis’ remote location and the fading daylight, Two Bear Air (search and rescue support aviation) was requested to extricate Curtis from the incident site.

After rescuing Curtis, Two Bear Air landed near Avery where she was then transported by Lifeflight (air ambulance) to a hospital.
