Postseason prospects good for Silver Valley
It’s postseason time for high school sports and there are some very promising movers and shakers here in Shoshone County.
At Mullan High School, the Lady Tigers volleyball team has put together a solid season which has them right in the thick of the North Star League as they head into their district tournament.
After nabbing the second seed, the Tigers have wins over all of their NSL opposition save for top-seeded Clark Fork, who they should be eyeing as their chief roadblock on their way to a state tournament berth.
They will open the NSL District Tournament against Genesis Prep at Clark Fork High School at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Mullan Tigers Football Team has one shot to get into the state playoffs and it all comes down to this week.
A loss ends Mullan’s season
Should the Tigers figure out the Lakeside Knights, it would move them into a tie for first place in their league.
The result?
A Kansas Tiebreaker.
Similar to what is done in NCAA Div. 1 football, the tiebreaker would be between Mullan and Lakeside with the winner hosting Kendrick the following week.
But first, they have to beat Lakeside this week.
And this time they’ll be a full strength with the return of Adam Ball, the Tigers massive potential All-league linebacker.
Mullan will host Lakeside this Friday at 3 p.m. at John Drager Field.
In Wallace, the Lady Miners have had one of their most competitive seasons to date and they will once again be in the difficult position of going into their usual play-in game blindly.
Although it varies by what seed they play, the Miners always get a tough draw against a member of District II’s Whitepine League.
This year the Miners will play the WPL’s third place finishers from their district tournament at Post Falls Middle School, Thursday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m.
Should they win that match they would move onto another play-in match this Saturday in Boise, against the second place team out of (the combined) Districts IV, V, and VI.
A win in that game and Miners would qualify for the 1A DI State Tournament at Lapwai High School.
The Wallace Miners Football Team elected to disqualify themselves from postseason play by playing a smaller schedule due to declining numbers in the program.
Kellogg Volleyball is hosting the 3A District I Tournament this week after a clean sweep of the Intermountain League.
They entered as the favorites to win their district and are also being viewed as potential favorites to win a state championship.
Timberlake appears to be the next best team in the IML after the Wildcats, but Priest River has been a slight thorn in Kellogg’s side on a couple of occasions this season.
The top two finishers from the District I Tournament qualify for a berth at the 3A State Tournament, which will be played at one of Kootenai County’s 5A high school facilities on Nov. 1.
The Kellogg Football Team clinched a postseason opportunity with their win over Bonners Ferry last week.
Due to Idaho’s new RPI rules for the 3A State Playoffs, Kellogg has two routes ahead of them as they head toward this week’s showdown with Timberlake:
They can win and clinch their district’s automatic berth into the playoffs, or, should they lose at Timberlake, they will be hosting the second place finisher out of District VI in a defacto playoff game on Nov. 7.
The winner will then advance into the official State Playoff bracket, but will be re-seeded based upon their RPI ranking.
Either way, the Wildcats are in.
Kellogg High School’s Cross Country Team has ran all across the Idaho Panhandle and is now ready for this week's District I Meet at Farragut State Park, in Athol.
Runners may qualify for the State Meet as a team or as individuals.
Kellogg’s soccer team bowed out gracefully to the Timberlake Tigers last week in the opening round of the 3A District I Tournament.
