It’s that time of the year again to let loose your little ghosts and goblins on the town to collect as much candy as they can! While the spirit of Halloween is rooted in fun and maybe some harmless frights, it’s still never a bad idea to be safe when trick-or-treating.

Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office Cpt. Jeremy Groves explains that there are a few simple tips that parents and kids can follow to avoid danger and keep everyone having fun.

First off, before going out, adults should know what areas their trick-or-treaters will be going to and establish check-in times with them.

When choosing an area to trick-or-treat in, make sure it’s a well-traveled and better lit neighborhood that everyone involved is familiar with.

“This way if something does happen, you’re within shouting distance of someone who can help,” Cpt. Groves said.

When going out, adults should encourage children to stay in groups, be cautious of strangers and stress that they should never go inside the home of someone they don’t know.

If you are driving around Halloween night, be sure to be extra aware of your surroundings and allow more time to your destination — as navigating streets filled with kids could add minutes to your travel time.

“We know there’s going to be a huge increase in foot traffic and little ones running around,” Groves said. “This is why everyone should be extra cautious driving around that night, especially in residential areas.”

Once the kids return with their bounty of candy, adults should throughly check their haul to make sure everything is what it is supposed to be.

Trick-or-treat times across the Silver Valley are set for 6 to 7 p.m., but it is not uncommon to see kids out a bit earlier and/or later than that.

The following are various Halloween themed events going on in Silver Valley cities on top of standard trick-or-treating:

Pinehurst

Real Life Ministries will be holding their Harvest Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pinehurst Elementary School, 201 S. Third St., Pinehurst. Attendees will be treated to games, costume contests and food provided by Real Life Ministries.

Smelterville

Silver Valley Worship Center will be hosting an event from 5 to 7 p.m. Halloween night at their building at 307 Main St., Smelterville. Games and maybe even a corn maze may be available.

Kellogg

Silver Mountain Resort and the Kellogg Police Department will host the Spooktacular Trunk-or-Treat event from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Silver Mountain parking lot.

Instead of the traditional door-to-door style trick-or-treat, trunk-or-treat gives families a centralized location to get their candy. It’s not just fun for the kids either. Candy givers get to decorate their cars for the kids to visit, which really condenses the Halloween experience into something that everyone can see and experience.

Attendees are asked to come in costume and bring a container that holds lots of candy. Anyone who would like to decorate their car and hand out candy should call 208-659-6372 and ask for Veronica.

Wallace

Wallace Public Library will host a Halloween craft hour from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the library, 415 River St., Wallace.

Mullan

The Mullan Public Library will be hosting a Halloween Carnival from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Morning Club, 117 Hunter St., Mullan. For more information, contact Debbie Morris at 208-744-1326.
