Mullan football

MULLAN — The Tigers needed a statement or else it was all over for them.

Their 50-36 win over Lakeside has shifted all of the pressure back onto the Knights, who now have to win this week to get to the Kansas Tiebreaker for the North Star League’s lone playoff berth.

It was a cold afternoon at John Drager Field, but Mullan was hot from the start.

Forcing multiple turnovers and turning them into points was the key to the Tigers’ victory.

At the very least the win secured Mullan a share of the NSL championship, but should Lakeside lose this week to Clark Fork then Mullan would claim an outright title and advance to the State Playoffs without needing to play a tiebreaker.

“This was a big redemption win over a big, strong, bruising Lakeside Knights team,” Mullan coach Stetson Spooner said. “Our guys stepped up and made giant plays when we needed them. Now it’s time to stay tuned and see what happens in Clark Fork this week.”

Mullan had lost 36-6 to Lakeside earlier this season.

Mullan got outstanding production from the usual suspects as both Luke and Riley Trogden left their fingerprints all over the game, but it was Ian Farris and Skye Gallaway who really dominated the first and second halves respectively and pushed the Tigers to the win.

Should Lakeside win this week then Mullan and Lakeside would meet at Kootenai High School this Monday for a Kansas Tiebreaker.

Mullan volleyball

CLARK FORK — Clark Fork volleyball swept Mullan in the 1A Division II District 1 tournament championship Saturday to clinch its third straight trip to the state tournament.

The Wampus Cats took down the Tigers 25-13, 25-9, 25-15.

The tournament title comes after Clark Fork completed a perfect 8-0 season in the North Star League.

“I knew that it would take a lot of hard work to accomplish what we’ve accomplished, but they worked hard, they dug in and they played good,” Clark Fork coach Michelle Valliere said.

In the first set of the championship match, the Lady Cats rode a 16-0 run while senior Sophie McMahon was serving to a first-set victory.

Clark Fork dominated the second set as senior Ellie Kiebert blasted a couple kills to silence the Tigers.

The third game was more tightly contested early on but the Cats pulled away in the end.

Kiebert led the Cats with nine digs and five kills in the match.

Freshman Paige Valliere notched 18 assists and McMahon added four aces and seven kills.

“Hats off to Clark Fork, they’re a well-coached ball club,” Mullan coach Dawn McKinnon said. “I just think we should’ve played a little better.”

Mullan’s Tallowa Fallingwater was selected to the NSL All League team at the tournament.

Mullan advanced to the championship match after beating No. 3 seed Genesis Prep (2-15) 25-12, 25-17, 25-22 in the semifinals.

No. 1 Clark Fork took down No. 4 Lakeside (7-14) 25-21, 25-14, 25-21 in the other semi.

The Tigers would’ve had to beat Clark Fork twice in order to win the tournament championship.

Wallace volleyball

Lapwai d. Wallace

POST FALLS — The Wallace Lady Miners lost a tough, but competitive match to the Lapwai Wildcats during their District I-II play-in game on Thursday at Post Falls Middle School.

No scores were reported, but the Miners lost the match in four sets to their Whitepine League Opponents.

Wallace ends their season with a record of 10-7.

Kellogg football

Timberlake 47, Kellogg 6

SPIRIT LAKE — Jeremy McLemore ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns to power the Timberlake Tigers past the Kellogg Wildcats 48-6 in the Intermountain League finale for both state playoff bound schools at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field on Friday.

Timberlake (8-0, 3-0 IML) will have a bye into the quarterfinal round of the 3A playoffs.

Kellogg (3-5, 2-1) will host the Teton Redskins in a first round game this Friday at 7 p.m.

Kellogg cross country

ATHOL — The Kellogg Wildcats will be sending their Boys Cross Country Team as well as two members of their girls team to the 3A State Meet in Pocatello after their solid showing at the District I Meet at Farragut State Park.

Kellogg’s Lacey Medina finished second overall in the girls event while teammate Shaye Sullivan finished fourth. Garrett Miller took fifth for the boys while Judson Hall finished 11th.
