KELLOGG — There are some fresh new faces this year at Kellogg High School as the school welcomes four new teachers into the fold, as well as a shout out to a fifth teacher who arrived midway through last year.

Kayla Monroe (math), Emily Edlund (science), Janet Dose (family and consumer sciences), Adam Ream (choir) and Shad Frazier (band) will be helping shape the minds of local teenagers in the Kellogg School District.

Kayla Monroe’s journey with the KSD began last year when she was hired on at the semester break to fill a vacancy left by another teacher.

“I graduated in December and literally one month from my last day in college was my first day at Kellogg High School,” Monroe said.

Monroe really got involved too, not only teaching math, but also came in alongside Simon Miller as an assistant golf coach.

“I really do like it here,” Monroe said. “The school and community are so close, I have enjoyed being apart of it.”

Emily Edlund will be teaching physical science and chemistry at KHS this year and so far she thinks it’s going well.

“It’s been pretty great so far,” Edlund said. “The students have been great, the community is awesome and is probably my favorite part of the job.”

Janet Dose, has spent several years in the KSD, spending 25 years as the family and consumer sciences teacher at Kellogg Middle School.

Dose, who taught for three years at the high school level in Washington prior to her time at KMS, is excited to get back to teaching the older students.

“It’s been really nice to get back to this age group,” Dose said. “I love the little ones, but I like to be with students who will ask me why and don’t just believe everything I say without questioning it. It’s back to the challenge, the fun and the excitement of teaching older kids.”

Dose is also excited to have another chance to work with some students that she had at KMS just a few years prior.

Shad Frazier and Adam Ream were unable to be interviewed, but Ream has brought his own expertise to the KSD choir department filling the massive hole left behind by Joy Persoon’s retirement. Ream has also gotten involved with the pep band.

Frazier has stepped into the role of band director for the KSD, a role that comes with a lot of tradition and expectations and thus far has been doing well in his position.

KHS Principal Curt-Randall Bayer was complimentary of all of his new staff and had specific messages about each one that he wanted conveyed.

“It’s great to see Emily’s excitement with science. When we hired her, she said she wanted to be a part of Kellogg High School which really shows concern for students beyond the classroom,” Bayer said. “Shad Frazier has been a great addition. He got our band programs up and running quickly and full of school spirit. I can’t say enough about Adam Ream’s positive demeanor, which cultivated a great atmosphere right out of the gate in his classes. This is Kayla Monroe’s first full semester with us. She has already set the groundwork for great things in her math classes. Janet Dose brings a passion for her subject and all of the work she put in to redesign her classroom was amazing.”
