Kellogg volleyball
KELLOGG — It was three up and three down for the Kellogg Lady Wildcat Volleyball Team last Thursday when they hosted the Bonners Ferry Badgers.
The Wildcats made short work of their Intermountain League rivals, winning in three sets (25-8, 25-17, 25-15).
Kellogg opened the match up at a torrid pace, mostly powered by sophomore Hailey Cheney who dominated the Badgers from the service line.
“We started off with a fast pace tempo game with a lot of strategy for ball placement and the girls did an amazing job at executing it,” Kellogg coach Steph Brunner said. “Hailey was an absolute menace at the net and behind the serving line. I feel like our serve game was phenomenal tonight which is a huge help keeping the ball on our side at out our momentum.”
Senior Cierra Brandt made sure that her presence was felt as well as she and Cheney both tallied up 15 kills apiece.
While Kellogg’s twin towers kept the pressure on Bonners all match long, it was the efforts from the rest of the team that kept them in position to do what they did.
“I like how Grace Nearing and Jaron Figueroa ran the court tonight and kept Bonners on their toes by hitting the second ball over in a strategic aggressive way and by using our specialty sets to set up offensive plays,” Brunner said. “Jaron also did a great job hustling down plays and making sure her team was attacking not only with great sets but greats digs.”
Kellogg d. St. Maries
ST. MARIES — On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Cierra Brandt and company powered the Wildcats past the host Lumberjacks in three sets (25-15, 26-24, 25-15).
Coach Steph Brunner’s strategy based attack worked again for the Wildcats, who picked up their first win in St. Maries in some time.
“We had amazing court coverage tonight and got them out of system plays by serving to specific areas and hitting holes,” Brunner said. “Their libero made it very difficult to finish the first hit over the net. We had a lot of rallies and my girls did a great job at staying headstrong and continuing to set up our offense.”
Kellogg boasts a massive frontline that keeps a lot of teams at bay, but the Wildcats have an incredible group of back row players who make the impressive frontline play possible.
“Our back row was huge for us tonight,” Brunner said. “Not many balls hit the ground and almost every pass was right to our setters. I’m very pleased with our level of play and I can’t wait to see what the season brings. I still feel like we have another gear we have yet to tap into.”

HARRISON FLATS — Kali Davis had nine aces, while Jaden House chipped in eight kills as the Miners knocked off Kootenai in three sets, 25-13, 25-22, 25-23, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in both teams’ North Star League opener.
Wallace d. Genesis Prep
WALLACE — Jaden House was a force for the Miners as they clipped the Jaguars in three sets, 25-6, 25-14, 25-13, on Thursday, Sept. 12.
Wallace’s Riley Valley finished with one block and 16 assists for the Miners.
Mullan volleyball
Mullan d. Kootenai
HARRISON FLATS — The visiting Tigers swept the Warriors 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 in North Star League play on Thursday, Sept. 12.
Talowa Fallingwater finished with 10 kills while Emily Dykes with recorded five of her own.
“It was just an all-around great team effort,” coach Dawn McKinnon said.
Kellogg cross country
HAYDEN — The Kellogg Wildcat boys took third place among the small school classification during the Coeur d’Alene Invitational at Hayden Canyon on Saturday.
Garrett Miller finished 12th overall, while teammate Ethan Guy finished 19th.
Female runner Alyssa Gilmore was 11th for small schools varsity classification and Lacey Medina, Shaye Sullivan and Lora Allred took first, second and third, respectively, in the girls JV race.
Wallace swimming
COEUR d’ALENE — The number of swimmers representing Wallace High School grew to nine last Friday at the Post Falls Invitational meet held at the Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene. The team ended the day with 10 top 10 finishes against Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, and Sandpoint swimmers.
Senior Shylynn Rihtarshich won her heat and finished sixth overall in the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 36.40. She also claimed 10th place in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:25.68. Teammates Jackie Richardson and Francis Conboy finished 10th and 13th respectively in the 50-yard freestyle, and Conboy claimed 12th place in the 100-yard freestyle.
Richardson, a sophomore, turned in a ninth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.68.
For the Wallace men, Carter Bailey claimed a pair of ninth-place individual finishes and anchored a sixth-place relay team. Bailey swam the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle in 29.22 and 1:09.45, and was joined in the 200-yard freestyle relay by Aydin Hazs, Kody Richardson, and Will Farkas for a time of 2:06.37.
Dorsey Pearson finished the 200-yard freestyle in fifth place with a time of 2:27.35 and rounded out the top 10 in the 100 yard freestyle at 1:10.28.
Hazs, McNeil, and Farkas finished 12, 14th, and 15th in the 50-yard freestyle out of a field of 34 swimmers. Hazs and McNeil took 13th and 15th in the 100-yard freestyle.
Richardson, Farkas, McNeil, and Hazs teamed up for a sixth-place finish in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay.
Wallace will compete again at noon Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene against Lake City, Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, Lewiston, and Post Falls high schools.

Kellogg 3, Bonners Ferry 3
KELLOGG — The Kellogg Soccer Team had no problem finding the net last week during its Tuesday, Sept. 10, match with the Badgers — the only problem was that Bonners Ferry was able to match them.
Karmyn DeHart got the Wildcats on the board first and Lora Allred tallied two goals of her own for Kellogg.
“Really liked the grit and hard work the girls showed,” Kellogg coach Craig Petersen said. “We are creating a lot of scoring opportunities so we just need to work on finishing (scoring). The team is really starting to gel and communicate better with one another. I'm liking our chances going forward if we continue to play all 80 minutes. Since we only have two substitutes, the girls cannot afford to have mental lapses going forward if we want to compete.”

Mullan 52, Victor (Mont.) 6
ST. REGIS — The Tigers continued their run of dominant play with a dismantling of Victor on Friday night.
Playing the lone game of the season on their St. Regis field, the Tigers had some personnel changes to deal with and fortunately they didn’t miss a step.
As the scoring opportunities have flowed with ease, head coach Stetson Spooner has credited his defense for going under the radar while the offense gets all of the credit.
“As we are 3-0, our defense deserves much of the credit for our staggering 178-28 point differential so far,” Spooner said. “We continue to create turnovers which coach Jesse Allan preaches and expects from our athletic bunch.”
Spooner always looks for a way to compliment his adversaries each week and he was particularly impressed with Victor’s size.
“Victor was an extremely physical team with great size. Between the tackles was not an option for us at all with the way those young big sized guys pushed,” Spooner said. “They have a bright future with a solid coaching staff. Class personified with regards to the Victor Pirates.”
Mullan will be on the road this Friday taking on the Lakeside Knights in Plummer at 7 p.m.
Kellogg football
Kellogg 46, Orofino 0
KELLOGG — Wildcat senior quarterback Brandon Miller had been waiting for a game like this one. After two weeks of playing stout defenses, he and his team walked onto Teeters Field with an edge that Orofino had no chance of matching.
Miller broke away for several big runs that resulted in scores and then even had a chance to air it out a few times to get his receivers involved.
On the other side of the ball, reigning Intermountain League defensive player of the year Justin Lehto and company held the Maniacs to just one first down.
Kellogg (1-2) will host Asotin, Wash., this Friday at 7 p.m.
