KELLOGG — That crisp cool is in the air and the Shoshone Medical Center Foundation’s Fall Fest is right around the corner.

After years of holding its annual Summer Wine auction fundraiser, the new leadership at the SMC Foundation decided to mix it up and move the popular event to autumn.

“We had our annual golf tournament in May and then we would turn around and have Summer Wine in July,” said Tami Atkins, foundation president. “They’re just too close together, so we decided we’d try something new this year. That’s where Fall Fest came from.”

The event on Oct. 5 will feature a live and silent auction with authentic auctioneers from Spokane and will feature a myriad of excellent items to bid on including Gonzaga basketball tickets, a Silver Mountain Resort stay and play package, a full year floral subscription via Sol & Serre, and then numerous specialty gift baskets just to name a few.

In the past, a full meal would be provided for attendees, but in the spirit of change, the foundation decided to go with an appetizer menu with a twist.

“There will be five tables with a different appetizer at each table,” said Ashlee Myles, foundation executive director. “People will have five tickets to try each one and when they go to each table, they will get an appetizer and also have a beer or wine recommended to them that would best pair with that particular appetizer.”

The foundation uses its fundraisers to make sure that it can fund projects the hospital may have planned on doing, but may not have the funding allocated.

“One of the things we are focusing on with the funds from Fall Fest are new wheelchairs,” Myles said. “There’s a new wheelchair design that really helps transfer patients. It’s easier for the patients and safer to use. It’s so much easier on the nursing staff to use as well.”

The wheelchairs in question, the Prime TC by Stryker, are incredibly user friendly with easy big Wheel maneuverability, movable, but not removable components, simple highlighted activation points that make operation intuitive for all users, and a one-touch central brake.

Each chair costs a few thousand dollars and SMC plans on having one of them at each one of its six locations.

Myles would also like to thank those businesses who have sponsored and donated toward the event.

The SMC Foundation is the philanthropic side of Shoshone Medical Center and is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization committed to obtaining funding to help meet the health care needs of the Silver Valley by providing equipment, services and education to Shoshone Medical Center and the community it serves.

Fall Fest will be held at 6 p.m. at Noah’s Loft at Silver Mountain Resort.
