#BeTheLightID comes to the Silver Valley

Tonight is going to be a special night for local senior spring athletes when Kellogg, Wallace and Mullan participate in #BeTheLightID.

In North Idaho, #BeTheLightID is scheduled to take place tonight at 8:20, where the schools will turn on the lights at their outdoor stadiums for 20 minutes.

Local fans are invited to drive by the stadiums — remaining in their cars — to honor the class of 2020, which saw its spring sports season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mullan will actually be holding their event earlier than everyone else in the Valley in an effort to allow people to make it to Wallace or Kellogg if they want to try and support the other local schools in the area.

“We really wanted to make sure that as many people as possible could get to as many of these as possible to support all of these kids who aren’t getting to have their seasons, or even more so, the end of their senior year,” said Stetson Spooner, Mullan athletic director. “It was an easy call to make, and it just made sense.”

Mullan doesn’t have lights around their football field, so instead they are inviting folks to turn their brights on and take a couple laps around John Drager Field with their horns honking at 8 p.m.

In Wallace, or rather Silverton at Sather Field, attendees will honk their horns as they drive through the back gate into Sather Field and through the front gate as the field is lit up.

“Show these students and athletes that we are still behind them 100% and we can’t wait until we can eventually come back together and watch them compete again,” said Bruce Bailey, Wallace athletic director.

Kellogg will light up Teeters Field so drivers can cruise up Hill Street and then turn onto McKinley Avenue, lights on, horns honking.

Both Kellogg and Wallace will begin at 8:20 p.m.

Spring sports events and practices have been suspended since March 17 by the Idaho High School Activities Association.

The Idaho State Board of Education has issued a “soft closure” of all schools for the remainder of the school year, but the IHSAA has yet to officially cancel the spring sports season.
