KELLOGG — Gavin Luna scored 16 points and Tyler Oertli added 12 as the host Wildcats downed the Spartans in Intermountain League play at Andrews Gymnasium.
Graden Nearing, the leading scorer for Kellogg who had missed the last three games with a hand injury, added 10 points in limited minutes.
Kellogg had 14 steals in the first half, but just scored 25 points and led by 13 at halftime.
“Guys were flying around in the first half; we just weren’t making shots,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said.
The second half went much differently as the Wildcats conceded more points, but found their offensive groove as well.
Trent Kreager scored a game-high 17 points for Priest River.

SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Ashton Peightal hit all three of his free throws after being fouled with a little over two minutes remaining, and the Tigers held off the Wildcats in an Intermountain League matchup between last year’s IML champs (Timberlake) and 3A District 1 champs (Kellogg). Zach Yetter scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half for Timberlake.
“We had a great first half of basketball, but struggled a bit in the third quarter,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “We just hung tough. Zach did a great job and hit his free throws, and it just kind of gave us some breathing room. Both Zach and Ashton, they’re sophomores, and for them to step up tonight, it was huge.”
Peightal finished with 10 points, Jack McDonald 11 for Timberlake.
Graden Nearing scored 19 points for Kellogg.
“They’re a well-coached team and great program,” Menti said of Kellogg. “I thought we did a good job of forcing them into some turnovers.”

WALLACE — Day Day Higgins scored a gamehigh 16 points with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Lakeside Knights in their win over the Wallace Miners in a North Star League game at Kirby Krulitz Court on Wednesday.
The Miners kept things interesting in the first quarter, but Lakeside’s size and depth finally caught up to them and the Knights ran away with the game late in the second quarter.
Vander Brown scored 14 points for Lakeside.

PLUMMER — Sophomore Jaden House hit three 3-pointers and scored 21 points as the visiting Miners beat the Knights to take over first place in the North Star League.
Sarah Johnson added 12 points for Wallace.
Jolissa Holt scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter for Lakeside.
“We just gave them way too many second opportunities, and we didn’t shoot the ball well,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said.

SPIRIT LAKE — Different faces, but the results remain the same for the Tigers in the Intermountain League.
Taryn Soumas scored 23 points and Brooke Jessen added 21 points for the Tigers in a romp over the Wildcats to clinch a sixth straight league title.
“The kids really have to buy into things, and this year, this group has been focusing on improving each game,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “This team has improved a lot from the beginning of the year. Tonight, they looked sharp on both ends of the court.”
Timberlake, ranked third in this week’s state prep media poll, led Kellogg — ranked fifth this week — 42-12 at halftime.
“We didn’t do anything special, but played really disciplined defensively all night,” Miller said. “We took good shots all game, and made quite a few.”

KELLOGG — The Wildcats came up just short against fifth ranked Timberlake, but skated the Lumberjacks with relative ease before winning a nail biter against second ranked American Falls.
Dakota Eixenberger, Judson Hall, Austin Stepro and Robbie Bublitz all picked up pins for the Wildcats against Timberlake.
In the second dual Ethan Guy, Travis Lohr, Judson Hall, Austin Stepro and Robbie Bublitz all had pins.
Dakota Eixenberger, Ethan Guy, Judson Hall, Austin Stepro, Carson Hudson and Robbie Bublitz all won by pin, while Brody Hoffman picked up a big decision in overtime.
“I was really pleased with how we wrestled the Tigers. Our wrestlers at each weight class really pushed the pace and continually gave ourselves a chance to win matches and keep us in the match throughout,” head coach Scott Miller said. “We spotted American Falls 24 points in forfeits and still came out with a victory over the number two team in the state so we are very excited and proud of this victory. Brody Hoffman had a huge win for us at 182 with his overtime win and Austin Stepro got a big win over the number four kid (in the latest state rankings). Robbie Bublitz concluded a great night at heavyweight with an outstanding pin to put us in control and Dakota Eixenberger won the match for us with his pin at 113. Just a great, team win on a fun night of wrestling.”
North Idaho Rumble
Jan. 31 – Feb. 1
COEUR d’ALENE — The Kellogg Wildcats went to war with some of the best wrestling programs in the area and they did not disappoint.
Ethan Guy (120 pounds) and Judson Hall (138 pounds) finished in third and fourth places respectively and the Wildcats finished 12th overall.
“Ethan had a great tournament, going 6-1 for the weekend and a third place finish,” Kellogg coach Scott Miller said. “He responded well to a quarterfinal loss and cruised through his last four matches to earn his medal. Judson went 5-2 for the weekend, finishing fourth in arguably the deepest weight at the tournament. He beat really good people and only lost to the returning state champion from New Plymouth, first in the quarterfinals and then in the third place match. He is doing a great job consistently wrestling his match and forcing the action on his opponents.”
