ST. MARIES — St. Maries had the momentum after the first quarter in the annual Brawl for the Ball spirit game against visiting Kellogg after the first quarter.

The Wildcats took it, and didn’t give it back, erasing an early deficit for a 57-37 win at St. Maries High on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Lumberjacks won the Ball.

Coleman Ross scored 11 points for St. Maries, which led 19-14 after the first quarter before losing starting center Tristan Gentry to a concussion in the second quarter and scoring 18 points the rest of the game.

The rest of the game was a defensive masterpiece as Kellogg clamped down defensively and got basically anything they wanted on the offensive end.

With 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter the Wildcats held a 33-28 lead, but after rotating the starters back into the game it was all over for the Lumberjacks.

“I think that was the first time we put together an entire game,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “We’re starting to get healthy and that’s going to help, but we’re going to be a tough out for anyone if we play defense like we did in the second half.”

Brandon Miller scored 12 points for Kellogg.

“Kellogg did a good job of pressuring our guards and turning us over,” St. Maries head coach Bryan Chase said.

In girls action, Hailey Cheney scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half to lead the visiting Wildcats past the Lumberjacks 52-20 in the girls Brawl for the Ball spirit game on Saturday. Jaron Figueroa and Gracelyn Nearing each added nine points for Kellogg.

Make that a clean sweep of the Lumberjack for Kellogg (3-0 vs. St. Maries this year) and now it’s back to business at hand for the fifth ranked team in the state.

“That was a lot of fun,” coach Jana Nearing said postgame. “We got out and got the looks we wanted and we even were able to get some of our other girls going too which is going to be important for us during the next stretch of the season.”

That stretch will include a four game homestand including a rematch against Sandpoint and the Wildcats’ first meeting with IML foe Timberlake.

Kellogg 64, Priest River 20: Hailey Cheney had 32 points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats beat the host Spartans on Jan. 8 in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.

“We just played good pressure defense and ran the floor really well,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “We were able to get some stops and keep them out of their offense. We had a really good inside and outside game with our guards and posts tonight.”

Genesis Prep 68, Wallace 61 (OT): After starter Scott Mwinuka fouled out late in regulation, reserve Caleb Schroeder hit two 3-pointers in overtime, sparking the visiting Jaguars past the Miners in nonleague play on Jan. 7 at Kirby Krulitz Court.

Eli Gonzales scored seven of his 11 points in the extra four minutes for Genesis Prep (5-4).

“We had some guys step up,” Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert said. “Next man up. They played huge minutes for us, so I was pleased with how we ended the game. I was pleased with our defensive effort the last five minutes of the game. Early in the game we played selfish defense, but we buckled down at the end.”

Carter Bailey scored a game-high 22 points for Wallace.

Clark Fork 49, Mullan 22: Sara Hathaway scored 11 points to lead the Wampus Cats past the Tigers in a Jan. 7 North Star League game at the Mullan Pavilion. Emily Dykes scored 11 points for Mullan who got leading scorer Talowa Fallingwater back for the first time since a sprained ankle sidelined her in mid-December.

Mullan 49, Clark Fork 45: Luke Trogden scored 29 points, including five points in the final two seconds from the freethrow line as the Tigers held off the Wampus Cats in a Jan. 7 North Star League game at the Mullan Pavilion.

“Clark Fork just played hard, and so did we,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “It was a great, great basketball game.”

Cameron Garcia scored on a layup with 30 seconds remaining to give Clark Fork a 44-41 lead. Trogden hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 44.

On the ensuing possession, Mullan freshman Blake Layton drew a charging foul with 2.4 seconds left.

After the play, Clark Fork was assessed a technical foul and Trogden made a free throw to give Mullan the lead.

A Mullan turnover gave Clark Fork the ball back. On the inbounds play, Garcia broke down the court and was fouled with .6 seconds remaining.

Garcia made the first, tying the game at 45, but had the second waved off due to a lane violation.

The Wampus Cats were whistled for two technical fouls and Trogden hit all four free throws to seal the game.

“Somehow, we survived,” Elston said.

POST FALLS — The Kellogg Wildcats were the champions of the River City Duals Silver Bracket this past weekend, knocking off several larger schools from around the region.

The Wildcats knocked off Ephrata, Wash., Lewiston, and Walla Walla, Wash., on their way to the championship with grapplers Ethan Guy and Judson Hall going undefeated in the process.

“I'm very proud of our team and coaches for their effort this weekend,” Kellogg coach Scott Miller said. “It was truly a team effort as every match we got different people to step up and carry the team.”

The Wildcats had a tough match against Nampa during the first night which got them into the Silver Bracket, but from there on out it was all Kellogg.

“Ephrata gave us some really good battles, but I was pleased how our kids hung in there and took control of their matches, building leads and finishing off opponents when the opportunity arose,” Miller said. “Huge win for us against Lewiston. First time we've beat a IEL 5A team since I've been here. The kids did a great job of surviving storms and hanging around to give themselves a chance. Also important is that our kids are not giving up pins which gives us a chance against bigger and deeper teams. I am really proud of the team for this win.”

Kellogg used big pins at the 182, 220, and heavyweights to knock off Walla Walla in the championship.

Miller is excited for how this tournament sets the Wildcats up headed into the back half of their season.

“Great team win and I'm really proud of the team for the effort they put in,” Miller said. “This really gives us momentum going into next week and the rest of the season.”
