Skye's the limit for Mullan's Gallaway

MULLAN — Mullan High School senior Skye Gallaway will be taking his talents to Dillon, Mont., for the upcoming football season after signing a letter of intent to play football for the University of Montana Western Bulldogs.

Gallaway recently put a nice bow on what was already a stellar career at MHS with his second All-State award in the last three years, this time as a running back after being an All-State wide receiver during the 2017-18 season.

Despite the individual award, Gallaway embodied the team spirit that has been cultivated in Mullan over the past few seasons and was thankful for the opportunities he was afforded.

“Being All-State was definitely better this time around because of the success we had as a team, and I was glad my numbers were as good as they were with the opportunity I was given,” Gallaway said. “I just wish I had a couple more opportunities to run the ball so I could’ve locked that first team award instead of second team.”

Mullan’s head coach Stetson Spooner, a former Montana Western football player himself, has been guiding Gallaway on the gridiron for the last four years and was exceptionally proud of his star player.

“What a huge day for a great student athlete and our Tiger football program,” Spooner said during the signing. “After an outstanding football career in high school, Skye has officially signed his letter of intent and has accepted his scholarship to attend The University of Montana Western next fall. The Dawgs are getting much more than a two-time All-State athlete. Both Tiger communities are excited for you. Your school, coaches, friends and family are proud of you. Go do great things.”

Gallaway was an integral part of the Mullan/St. Regis co-op that got the Tigers back into the 1A State Playoffs last fall and now will be taking on the competition at the NAIA level.

Montana Western competes in the Frontier Conference for football, with other conference schools including Carroll College of Helana, Mont., Montana Tech of Butte, and College of Idaho of Caldwell.

While achieving this was among several goals for Gallaway, it is definitely not his only goal.

He is excited to get to a place where everyone on the field shares his kill-be-killed mentality while building the relationships that will likely follow him into adulthood.

“I was pretty excited to sign that letter of intent because I’ve always wanted to play ball at the collegiate level and better my education,” Gallaway said. “I’m ready to be somewhere where everybody is all in and not just there to be there. I’m looking forward to all the relationships I’m gonna build and the family I’ll have.”

Gallaway is known in both North Idaho and Western Montana as a lighting quick back, who can also be an absolute bruiser when necessary.

During the 2019 season he finished with more than 1,500 offensive yards and 19 touchdowns to lead the Tigers.

Gallaway plans to major in business while in school.
