More Trump off-the cuff ‘wisdom’

| July 8, 2020 9:34 AM

President Trump is quite famous for just speaking off-the cuff, without giving any thought to his remarks. Lots of folks like that about him, I guess. I opine that it wouldn’t be so bad if he were, maybe, just a senator or lowly politician. But he’s the recognized leader of the free world, for crying out loud!

Another faux pas I noticed in his Independence Day speech “shivered my timbers”. His quote: “...we will defend, protect, and preserve (the) American way of life, which began in 1492 when Columbus discovered America”. Now, I can’t fathom saying something like that, when America didn’t even exist at that time. The American way of life wasn’t even a figment of anyone’s imagination until at least the colonial period in the 1700’s. A president who should be more aware of the nation’s history than the average sixth grade student, one who admits to seldom (or never) reading books, watching anything except “Fox news”, should not be demonstrating such ignorance.

He has a vision for making a “Garden of Heroes”. I must point out that Columbus, while accidentally discovering the “new world” is not in any way an “American hero”. Heroes do not get that status by accident. And furthermore, heroes of a revolution are not heroes of the country they are revolting against, even if they are talented and courageous people. I’d like to see such a project. But I’d like Joe Biden to establish such a “Garden”. Just sayin’.
