SMELTERVILLE — Shoshone Medical Center Family Medicine will be conducting free sports physicals on Wednesday.

Open to all high school athletes from Kellogg, Mullan and Wallace School Districts, the event is hosted in effort to make sure that nothing stops local kids from participating in school sports.

“There are enough obstacles that often prevent our Silver Valley youth from participating in sports programs through the school, so if we can do our part to alleviate an obstacle in a child’s life, we then are going to strive to do that,” said SMC Business Development Coordinator Shayleen Jerome. “These youth are our future and we are happy to provide this opportunity to them.”

This sentiment was echoed by SMC Clinic Director Dana Vawter who was quite candid with the importance of offering the sports physicals to the community for free.

“We believe that a student’s socioeconomic status should not determine whether or not they get to play sports,” Vawter said.

Part of SMC’s strategic vision is to make sure that they can address as many community needs as possible, and after a successful 2019 and then being shut down during 2020, the hope is to see as many kids as possible.

“Our vision is to provide valley wide health care services that assure the provision of quality services, and one of our many commitments is to provide resources for facilitating wellness awareness and promoting community health education,” Jerome said. “By offering this event to our local youth, we are promoting health and wellness while providing a service that fills a need that our community has.”

The free physicals are Wednesday, Aug. 4, beginning at 8 a.m. and running through 5 p.m. at SMC Family Medicine in Smelterville.

Student athletes need to make sure that they have all of the necessary paperwork and a signed consent form from a parent or guardian.
