All Aboard!

KELLOGG — “Seeing is believing, but, sometimes, the most real things in the world are the things we can't see."

Local families will be able to see the kindness and generosity of the student body of Kellogg High School on Wednesday, as they once again host the Silver Valley Polar Express drive-through event for children (from infancy through fifth grade).

Families are invited to assemble in their cars at the bottom of Jacobs Gulch and then make their way through the festively decorated winter wonderland. Along the way, attendees are sure to run into characters from the hit movie "The Polar Express," as well as popular Christmas figures such as Santa, Mrs. Claus and one particularly mischievous Grinch (who has been known to try and steal Christmas from time to time).

The event is being put on by Sources of Strength, National Honor Society and Kellogg High School’s leadership class — all groups of Wildcat students.

“I think this helps encourage our kids to think outside of themselves,” KHS Administrative Assistant Sarah Burkgart said. “It’s important for our students to be good examples, especially to the younger kids who may be intimidated by high school, and that our big kids are cool and that they can be kind and give of themselves for their community.”

Each eligible child who passes through the KHS Polar Express will receive a special ticket that includes a fun scavenger hunt for kids to complete during the ride, a gift bag with fun activities and a sweet holiday treat.

The KHS band and choir will be playing music and caroling throughout the event. The Kellogg Police Department and Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office will have officers on hand to greet kids, hand out goodies and share in the holiday spirit.

Kellogg High School’s Marine Corps JROTC Program will also be accepting Toys For Tots donations during the event.

In 2020, more than 350 kids made their way through the socially distanced and COVID-conscious event. Organizers hope to have just as many participate this year.
