A little ol' blackout isn't going to stop this party

There were more candles lit across the Silver Valley on Wednesday night than when Monica proposed to Chandler… But no power didn’t stop folks from making the best of a bad situation.

All across Shoshone County as rolling blackouts and freezing cold temperatures set in, families and friends took to candlelight, firelight and flashlights to do things like play games, read books, and have good old fashion conversations with one another.

County Commissioner Mike Fitzgerald — a man who spent the entirety of his day on Wednesday working in conjunction with the several departments trying to restore power — he used the blackout opportunity to go outside and take a look up.

“One of the nice things about Wednesday night was that I got to take a step outside and it was a nice, quiet, starry night,” Fitzgerald said. “And just having that moment of quiet — with the stars — was kinda cool.”

A drive through the Silver Valley on Wednesday night was incredibly eerie as dark streets gave way to empty parking lots and pitch black windows, but there were a few spots in both Kellogg and Wallace where folks congregated together and imbibed in a more intimate than usual fashion.

Mckinley Avenue in uptown Kellogg was one of those sites as people flocked to the Dirty Dog Saloon for a night of drinks, cards, pool, and visiting all via candlelight.

Kyrsten Kennaugh, one of the managers of the bar, said that despite the situation outside, what happened inside the bar was rather nice.

“You know, it was a lot of fun and we were pretty busy,” Kennaugh said. “But the best part was that with phones not really working and power being out, people were actually interacting with one another and playing games together, it was just really nice.”

A blackout may not be the most opportune time to demonstrate it, but it does go to show that electricity isn’t a requirement for people to have a good time together, in fact — it seems like just being together is the only real requirement for having a good time together.
