OSBURN — As readers may have noticed, a new byline has been gracing the pages of the Shoshone News-Press over the past month since Chelsea Newby joined the editorial ranks as the newest staff reporter.

Newby is a lifelong Shoshone County resident, a 2009 Kellogg High School graduate, and has since begun raising her family here with her husband, Cody.

After years of working as a barista, Chelsea was looking to take her communication skills and add an element of adventure to her professional life.

“I feel like I was already comfortable with new faces and talking to people and starting up conversations with them that I probably wouldn’t normally,” Newby said. “I really enjoy learning about parts of the community that I hadn’t discovered before.”

In her first month, Newby has written about several exciting topics including the ongoing water situation at Canyon Elementary School, a new group dedicated to restoring East Shoshone Park, and even cultivating a successful fundraiser for Meals on Wheels.

Let’s just say, she’s picking it up pretty quickly.

Coming in with no real training, putting her name out there has been a little intimidating, but she is excited to work with her community as a beacon of information.

“I was a little nervous starting this with no experience, but I’m looking forward to getting out there and learning all that I can,” Newby said.

Having a third voice in the newsroom has been refreshing for everyone at the SNP, which has operated with a two-person editorial staff for much of the past decade.

Newby grew up with News-Press County Editor Josh McDonald, who was thrilled when he heard that she was officially joining the staff.

“It’s kind of like working with a sibling,” McDonald said. “We played youth basketball together, my mom babysat her and her sister when we were really little. Chelsea has been such a breath of fresh air for all of us. She’s already so familiar with so much of the Valley and has really committed to learning what we do. It’s also really nice to have three people available to cover events.”

Newby married Cody in 2016 and together they are raising their three children, Gemma, Dawson, and Savannah.

When she isn’t breaking the news or serving up a fresh cup of joe, Newby and her family enjoy summertime camping excursions on the North Fork, being outdoors, watching the New York Giants, and being involved in their children’s lives.
