Elmer Mattila: Wallace City Council Uncontested

| October 22, 2021 12:03 PM

Incumbent Elmer Mattila is running unopposed for position two on the Wallace City Council.

Mattila, 73, graduated from Wallace High School and attended North Idaho College for two years.

Elmer was drafted into the U.S. Army. He returned to work twelve years in retail as a meat cutter for Steins IGA in Osburn. Leaving the grocery business he was employed by the ASARCO Wallace Office where he began in the purchasing department and later was promoted to the Personnel Director. Following a 1993 layoff Elmer was hired by Idaho Veneer Company in Post Falls, Idaho where he spent the next twenty years as their Director of Personnel. He retired in 2013. Mayor Dick Vester appointed him to the Wallace City Council Position #2 in 2016.

Elmer married Corki Hibbard in 1973. They have two children (Jamie and Colby) and four grandchildren.

Elmer and Corki raised two terrific children and each married wonderful spouses. Both grown children have master’s degrees and they are raising solid families of their own. That is his best achievement. On a city note it was huge seeing the new floor poured for the Wallace pool and feeling certain it will reopen next season.

Wallace has six City Council positions needing a majority of purpose to keep the city running smoothly. Even though our economy is deeply set in mining we have become a tourist destination over the years. Our laidback lifestyle, big town infrastructure and recreational opportunities have put us into a popular niche market with many newcomers purchasing homes in our community. Moving ahead with positive change we need to continue working on all fronts while maintaining Wallace as Wallace.
