Best hands in the state?
KELLOGG — Kellogg High School senior Kolby Luna was named to IdahoSports.com’s preseason Top 10 Wide Receivers/Tight Ends for the upcoming football season.
Luna is a three-sport athlete at KHS, including coming into his senior season as reigning Intermountain League most valuable player in basketball.
While he tends to get a bit overshadowed on the gridiron by his twin brother and quarterback Riply, Luna has cemented himself as one of Idaho’s top three pass catchers over the past two seasons.
A year ago, he recorded 55 receptions for 1,082 yards, and 16 touchdowns and the Wildcats finished their season with a 6-3 record and narrow loss in the 3A playoffs to South Fremont.
However, the difference between this year and last year is that the Wildcats are dropping from the 3A ranks and will find themselves playing in a league that they flat out dominated last year.
The new-look 2A Central Idaho League includes incumbents St. Maries, Orofino and Grangeville — the Wildcats along with Priest River are making the drop to create a new five-team league. Kellogg went 4-0 in their matchups with those four teams last year, and Luna caught 21 passes for 429 yards, and nine touchdowns in those games.
Luna is the 3A single season receiving yards record holder, and not from his dominant 2021 season, but from his sophomore year in 2020 when he netted 1,124 yards.
After another growth spurt, and an entire summer of winning various camp MVP awards, it is a very real possibility that he’ll finish his career with the single season receiving records in two different classifications.
Luna and the Wildcats open their season later this month with an immediate road test against 4A Moscow on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.
