KINGSTON –– The communal spirit of Shoshone County was on full display as the Kiwanis Club of the Silver Valley presented their Summer Concert in the Garden.

Held at the beautiful French Gulch Farm and Garden, and serenaded by the melodic voice of singer/songwriter Bill Bozly, it was easy to slip into the comfortable and generous atmosphere that the event presented.

The Summer Concert is the primary fundraiser for the local Kiwanis club, who in turn take the funds and provide vital services to the Silver Valley’s children.

Programs like the Silver Valley Snack Pak, Osburn’s Lions Park Renovation, Shop with a Cop, Silver Valley Headstart, Silver Valley Little League, as well as various teacher grants, scholarships, and extra clothing for the schools all receive funding through Kiwanis.

“The money goes to a few different programs, we always donate to scholarships, teacher grants, clothes for schools, headstart and youth sports programs,” club vice president Bridget Hojem said. “We also have a miscellaneous fund that we donate out of when new requests come up. For example, last year we donated to Shop with a Cop and the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office ‘No-Shave’ November.”

Those who attended were greeted with several fun fundraiser concepts that ensured a payout and really allowed for everyone to open their wallets.

From the $15 blind wine pool (where the luckiest pullers may land a $130 bottle of wine), the $10 guaranteed prize raffles, simple raffle tickets for drawings, even a game of chance involving a key and ornate lockbox were all ways to spend money and leave with something.

According to Hojem, this year was one of the biggest in the event’s history which means that even more funds will be available than ever before.

“Since this was a record breaking year, we will either be giving bigger amounts to the programs or seeking new Silver Valley kid’s programs to help fund – which will be discussed in our next board meeting,” Hojem told the News-Press.

Over 100 people packed the intimate setting, and those folks helped raise well over $10,000

The Silver Valley Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday at noon at Noah’s Canteen in the Silver Mountain Resort Village.
