Gerald D. Hakola, 84

Gerald Duane Hakola, affectionately known as “Jerry the Barber,” 84, of Kingston, Idaho, passed away Dec. 5, 2022, at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg, Idaho. Jerry was born on Dec. 29, 1937, in Spokane, Wash., a son of Finnish immigrants, Johannes and Vieno Hakola.

Jerry was one of five children and attended schools in Cheney, Wash. He became a barber and for 65 years cut hair in Oregon, Hawaii, Arizona and here in the Silver Valley. Jerry married Helen MaRee Bowcutt on Dec. 1, 1993, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

He enjoyed golfing and fishing, but took great pride in raising his chickens and selling their eggs. He had names for all of them and called their chicken coop the Taj Mahal.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Edward, Donald, Dennis and Maryann.

Survivors include his loving wife, Helen MaRee Hakola of Kingston; three daughters, Joann Hakola, Julianne Hakola and Tammie Hakola, all of Tacoma, Wash.; a stepson, Shane (Carrie) Howard of Kingston; and three stepdaughters, Chris (Harry) Vlastelic of Kingston, Deonne (Art) Moyers of Spangle, Wash., and Denise (Jerry) Ellingson of Coeur d’Alene. Jerry is also survived by numerous dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

At Jerry’s request, cremation will take place and celebration of his life will be planned for a later date.
