Beach Bum Bakery rolls into Kellogg

KELLOGG — “I love people; I love talking to them. Life is hard enough. So to be able to see people come by with a smiling face. I can’t solve all the problems, but I can make someone’s day a little better,” said Rebekah Garvin, the owner of The Beach Bum Bakery.

The Garvin family owns and operates the organic bakery, including Rebekah’s husband Isaac and daughters, pastry chef Maggie and their youngest daughter Hadassah.

The couple has lived in Idaho for around 30 years, eventually raising their daughters by being small business owners.

The bakery currently operates under the cottage food law, as Rebekah and her family bake delicious treats in their kitchen (previously their main bedroom).

“We actually gave up our master bedroom, and turned it into the bakery,” Rebekah said. “We are pretty serious about this.”

The Garvin’s are also serious about what they put into their food, as all the food is made by hand in small batches. After completing her senior research project at Boise State University on the relationship between GMOs and big agriculture, Rebekah became dedicated to serving her family only organic, or at least non-GMO foods, which has carried into the Beach Bum Bakery.

“I grew up with a lot of these foods. I use my mom’s recipe, and my grandma’s recipe. Some of these recipes have been passed down three generations.”

Along with delicious baked goods, the Garvin’s also love everything about the beach.

“When I say I’m going to the beach, I’m not going to the coast. I’m going to a river, or lake. There are so many beautiful places to go in Idaho.”

The shop will offer various mouth-watering baked treats weekly, including sourdough bread, peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies, French Boule’, ‘fudge’ energy balls, coconut granola, donuts, lemon scones, and more (of course, all organic). There is also organic coffee, hot cocoa, and locally made teas from Cripple Chicken Farm, and is currently the only drive-thru coffee stand in Kellogg. The best way to find out what the bakery sells weekly is to text “BEACH BUM” to (208) 714-1363

The current winter hours are Sunday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with fresh bread brought between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each day. For more information on the ingredients used and the Garvin family, visit The Beach Bum Bakery Facebook page.

The bakery is currently operated out of a quaint, cozy shanty on wheels, presently residing in Kellogg on Bunker Avenue in the parking lot behind The Furniture Exchange, across from Lookout Ski Shop.

The Garvin’s are eventually looking to upgrade their portable bakery to a commercial kitchen and would like a safe and warm place for the couple and their daughter Hadassah to work. If you would like to support the family in this venture, visit https://gofund.me/44f43f38.
