Dennis Gene Nearing, 74

Dennis Gene Nearing (Denny) passed away Jan. 29, 2022, in Aberdeen, Wash. Denny was born on August 3, 1947, to Luella (Miles) and Gene Nearing in Kellogg, Idaho at the Wardner Hospital.

Denny graduated from Kellogg High School in 1965. Throughout high school and for a few years after, he logged alongside his dad and Uncle Bob (Nearing Brothers), in and around North Idaho. In 1969, Denny and his dad ventured out on their own. They were joined in 1971 by Scott (Denny’s brother) and continued logging in the area. In 1976, the three of them incorporated and began DG&S Company. They worked together for 15 years before Denny left DG&S Company and relocated to Western Washington and the Wishkah Valley outside Aberdeen. He logged for many years in Idaho, Washington, Montana and Oregon before retiring early, which had been a lifelong goal. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He especially loved fishing in Alaska on his boat, the Jessie Lu, and traveling in his motorhome and wintering in Arizona.

He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Nearing; sister Tana Rainio; brother Frederick Nearing and his longtime companion, Myrna Fitzgerald.

He is survived by his mother, LuElla Nearing; brother Scott (Debbie) Nearing; sister Charlotte (Bruce) Cassidy and brother-in-law Ray Rainio; children JoLynn (John) Berge, Julie (Tim) Day, Jason (Robin) Nearing, Jessie Nearing and Debbie Wigen; grandchildren Katrina (Justin) Ator, Trey Berge, Jordan (Marshall Myhre) Day, Tucker Day, Owen Gidofalvi, Kirsten Wigen, Ashlynn Wigen and Kassidy Wigen; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, at the Hunt Cemetery in Kingston, Idaho. A reception will follow at the Hilltop Inn in Kingston from 1-4 p.m.

Denny’s family suggests memorial donations be made in his name to Hunt Cemetery, P.O. Box 722, Pinehurst, ID 83850.
