SILVERTON — Brothers Dallas and Tucker Cox are gearing up for a busy year, as they compete in local dirt bike competitions with the hopes of qualifying for a national-level competition.

The young boys have been racing for a few years now and their mother, Cara Cox, is excited to watch them as they continue to grow into solid racers.

“Dallas, my oldest son, is 9 and has been racing for three years. This is his first year on his new 65cc dirt bike. He has previously been competing with a 50cc,” Cox said. “Tucker is 5 and has been racing for two years and will still be racing on a 50cc.”

Dallas hopes with his new 65cc dirt bike, he can still outpace his opponents at the level he was used to. However, there will be a learning curve for him, as this bike will have more power and speed behind it.

Height, weight and experience are looked at when choosing a dirt bike, which is usually why most younger racers begin at the 50cc level.

The Silver Hills Elementary School students are scheduled to compete in several regional competitions and race series throughout North Idaho and Washington.

The first series of races begin at the end of this month in Lewiston, where the boys will compete in the Gold Cup Dealer Championship Series.

After that, the season is in full swing with races in St. Maries, Coeur d’Alene and Spokane on a near weekly basis.

According to Cox, the boys have been successful in their early racing careers, with Dallas winning several events last year — including the series at Christmas Hills in St. Maries. Tucker won his fair share of trophies last year as well, but unfortunately was out a good portion of the year with a fractured collar bone.

This year, Dallas will be testing the waters in a faster division, but Tucker fully expects to pick right up where he left off and plans on winning the Christmas Hills Series this year.

Racing under the No. 20, Tucker will be honoring his grandfather, who used to compete himself.

Dallas is looking to qualify for the Loretta Lynn Regional and National Race. The qualifier for competing to attend the Loretta Lynn Regionals is in April, followed by the national championship.

The Cox family would like to thank Haymans Auto Body, Wallace Ace Hardware, TR Excavation and Mcgillivray Environmental for sponsoring Dallas and Tucker.
