James “Jim” Dean Apthorp, 63

James “Jim” Dean Apthorp, 63, of Surprise, Ariz., passed away July 15, 2022, at the camping river property of Cedar Island, he so enjoyed. He was born June 7, 1959, in Inglewood, Calif. Jim was the son of Thomas Dean and Shirley (Vogel) Apthorp.

Jim was united in marriage to Kathleen “Kathy” Douglas on Feb. 14, 2003, in Glendale, Ariz.

Jim was a carpenter and had served in home construction building for many years. And before his retirement in October of 2021, he served in maintenance for Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.

Jim was a member of the Surprise Sundancers Volunteer Group. He loved and enjoyed his family and camping up the river on Cedar Island. Jim loved all sports, especially watching the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Indians.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy of Surprise, Ariz.; one daughter, Marti Kast (Ethan) of Spokane Valley, Wash.; one son, Colin Apthorp (Kaitlin) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Russell, Toby and Liberty; one brother, Scott Apthorp of Chardon, Ohio; two sisters, Elizabeth Hagood also of Chardon, Ohio, Sherry Baron of Tulum, Mexico; his uncle, Chuck Vogel of Lafayette, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Terry Douglas (Karla) of Kellogg; brother-in-law Rick Douglas of Spokane Valley, Wash.; and his beloved dog, Beau. Jim is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred.

Private family services will be held. Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery of Kellogg.
