Law enforcement searching for shooting suspect
ST. MARIES – Law enforcement officials from several agencies are attempting to locate a man that is believed to be responsible for a shooting death in St. Maries earlier today.
Sources close to the situation tell the News-Press that the suspect is identified as Lonnie Layman of St. Maries. He was last seen driving a red 2002 Mitsubishi Montero and may be fleeing, or has already fled, to Shoshone County near Calder. Layman is considered armed and dangerous.
According to KOFE 1240 AM, The St. Maries Gazette Record reports that shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, Benewah Bounty Sheriff's deputies and the St. Maries Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at Ridgeview Apartments.
Officers found the male victim, identified as Moses Shearer, 23, in the parking lot, bleeding from a single gunshot wound.
Officers and bystanders performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, but the victim was pronounced dead at Benewah County Hospital. The victim's family has been identified.
