Claude Lester Roberts, 63

| May 23, 2022 11:55 AM

Claude Lester Roberts, 63, of Smelterville, Idaho, succumbed to cancer at the Schneidmiller Hospice House, while being held by his wife and daughters on May 20, 2022.

Claude was born July 28, 1958, in Wardner, Idaho to Melvin “Joe” and Doris (Dougall) Roberts. Claude grew up in the Silver Valley and eventually left school to begin mining at the Sunshine Silver Mine in Big Creek. After the mine closed, he pursued other interests, but when the mine reopened, he returned as a hoistman. Claude retired from the Sunshine in 2020.

Claude married the love of his life, Roberta Fuchs, on December 22, 1980. Together they were blessed with two daughters and one granddaughter, which was his pride and joy. Claude enjoyed teaching his daughters to drive by allowing them to shift his truck or sit on his lap and steer. He ensured that they were self-sufficient by teaching them to change their own oil and flat tires, as well as, how to be adventurous by going out on ATV’s or hill climbing in the jeep. Claude put family first- always, and was a loving and dedicated father, grandfather and husband. He was also a Jack of All Trades around his home. Claude’s knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family; his family brought him so much happiness and joy.

Claude had a great sense of humor and could usually be found at the center of many pranks and mischievous activities. He loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time on local rivers and lakes. He enjoyed camping, fishing and being in the woods picking berries, harvesting wild mushrooms and hunting. Claude also enjoyed working on old vehicles, woodworking, and gardening. He always made his friends and family a priority and wanted to spend as much time with them as possible.

Claude leaves behind his wife of 42 years Roberta; daughters Claudia (Steven) Sharp, and Christina Roberts; his granddaughter Hailee Sharp; his mother Doris (Lloyd) Moran; sister Melva Roberts; brother John (Colleen) Roberts; nieces Jean (Dennis) Seagraves and Amanda (Daniel) Johnson; nephew Joe (Becky) Hollingsworth and their families whom he all adored. Claude was preceded in death by his father Melvin “Joe” Roberts and his sister Charlene Meligan.

Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Claude managed his illness with strength and determination. He will be dearly missed by those that loved him. Per his request, there will be no services, but his daughters will be holding a Celebration of Life closer to his birthday in July.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie Ave. Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho 83815; Hospice provided wonderful care for Claude and his family, during this most difficult time.
