Jackasses take over the Trail of the Cd'A's
KELLOGG — The Trail of the Coeur d’Alene's was filled with Jackasses (aka people who run for fun in the month of October) last Saturday for the third year of the Jackass Half-Marathon and 5K, followed by a pretty epic afterparty at Radio Brewing Company.
The race was sold out the day before it began, at a cap of 600, with racers coming from all over the country, including runners representing Utah, Montana, Texas, Washington, and more. There was also a strong representation from Silver Valley locals.
Kelton Enich, one of the event’s organizers explained that the event is capped at 600 people to “ensure a quality experience for all involved. By keeping the numbers small, we can guarantee that the shuttle, food, shirts, and swag are top notch for our participants.”
“Fastest Locals” were awarded for each race.
Half Marathon Fastest Local Male was won by Joe Hill of Wallace — clocking in at 1:44:58, while the fastest local female, Whitney Young, from Silverton came in at 1:51:04.
For the 5K, the fastest local male was Buck Coe from Pinehurst with a time of 23:45, and local fastest female, Heather Branstetter from Wallace came in at 28:57.
The race relies on around 100 dedicated and passionate volunteers to assist in aid stations and encourage the racers. The volunteers are encouraged to dress up, ring cowbells, honk horns, make funny signs, and maintain and manage the race.
“We seriously have the best volunteers,” Enich said.
Every racer that crossed the finish line was awarded a one-of-a-kind hand-crafted medal, made by students at Kellogg High School, a specialty Jackass Race T-shirt from Traveling T’s, and for those of age, a refreshing Ninja Star Japanese Lager from Radio Brewing.
After the 5K and Half-Marathon runners were done crossing the finish line, it was the kids' time to shine, as little racers participated in a fun run while the after-party began.
Live music from local musician Travis Brown started the after-party, as racers crossed the finish line, with the party ending with blues group Jackson Rolten Trio.
All proceeds from the race go to the Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce which in turn puts the money toward community events like Music In the Park, Business After Hours, and the addition of the Jackass Scholarship.
“We created two scholarships for local seniors amounting to $3,000,” Enich said. Last year, 17 students applied, with the Volunteer Scholarship awarded to Gracie Miller from Kellogg High School and the Runner Scholarship awarded to Jaden House from Wallace High School.
Applications for the scholarships can be found on the Jackass website, and is open to graduating seniors from Kellogg, Wallace and Mullan High School.
Enich would like to thank their title sponsors, Local Real Estate and Verdis Engineering, as well as the countless volunteers who came out to help run the event.
