Mullan Digs Pink vs. Wallace

MULLAN — Traditionally, when it comes to breast cancer awareness-themed volleyball games in the Silver Valley, Kellogg and Wallace High Schools are the ones that lead the charge with the annual Dig Pink Night. As of last Thursday though, Mullan High School is now joining in on the fun.

While she certainly wishes the outcome of the game went a little differently, Mullan Volleyball Coach Dawn McKinnon was happy to have the opportunity to support a couple good causes with a game against friendly-rival Wallace.

“It was a fun night all-together,” she said. “Not only was it Dig Pink Night, but it was senior night as well. Overall it was a great event for a great cause.”

Just like the Kellogg/Wallace Dig Pink Night, which the Lady Tiger also raised money for, proceeds and donations from the event went to supporting the Shoshone Cancer Resource Center.

All-together, the event raised $1,100 for the resource center and 217 pounds of food for the local food bank. The food was brought in by the MHS National Honor Society.

For the senior night side of things, veterans Caitlyn Garitone and Leah Frazier were recognized for their efforts on the team.

“This event was a great way to shine a light on great athletes throughout our communities and make it a little bigger than just volleyball by including some good cause actions,” said MHS Athletic Director Stetson Spooner.

The game was set to be with another school, but they dropped out due to a scheduling issue. With the special Dig Pink uniforms already in hand, McKinnon asked Wallace if they would be interested in filling in when they came into town. Wallace would end up winning the match in three sets.

“It was cool that we were able to participate in supporting the cause and hopefully we carry on this new tradition over the seasons,” she said.

The breakdown of monetary donations to the resources center includes:

• $378 donated at the Gate by Community Members

• $322 donated from the MHS Junior Class Concessions

• $100 donated from Mullan School District Superintendent Les Wells

• $100 donated from Mullan High School Principal Jacki Almquist

• $100 donated from MHS Student Body

• $100 donated from Don Kotschevar at Mullan Trail Gas and Grocery
