Important info for Shoshone County voters

| October 18, 2022 1:00 AM

WALLACE –– Election Day is just three weeks away and many folks may still need to figure out how and where they plan to cast their vote.

This voting cycle has several important state and local races for voters to make a determination on – including the state’s gubernatorial race.

At the local level, there are three contested races (one involving a write-in candidate) and four uncontested races.

The contested local races include the county commissioner seats for districts 2 and 3, and the position of coroner.

The uncontested local races involve the positions of clerk, assessor, treasurer, and prosecutor.

The Shoshone News-Press will be running candidate profiles on each of the candidates who choose to participate in the October 28 edition of the SNP. These free profiles focus squarely on the candidate being profiled and offer the community a chance to get to know them.

Unfortunately, an in-person candidate forum was unable to be put together – however, the SNP will be publishing a series of candidate “question and answer” specials for the candidates involved in contested races.

The candidates have all received questionnaires pertaining to their specific political races and their answers will be published – completely unedited.

Those answers will be published in the November 1 edition of the SNP.

Shoshone County has 14 voter precincts, including four mail-in precincts and one absentee precinct.

For those who cast their ballot at their local polling station, election day registration will be available for anyone who missed the registration deadline as long as they can show a picture I.D. along with proof of residence at the polls.

Photo I.D. is required to vote at the polls in Idaho. However, if a voter is not able to show a required photo I.D., they will be given the option to sign a Personal Identity Affidavit.

For those who prefer absentee voting, this may be done either by mail or in person at the courthouse. Absentee ballot applications are available from the clerk’s office at the courthouse or online at www.idahovotes.gov.

Any registered voter may make a written request to the County Clerk to have an absentee ballot mailed to them. The application must contain the voter’s name, residence address and address of where to send the ballot, and must be personally signed by the applicant.

The completed application may either be faxed to (208)752-1896, mailed to Shoshone County Elections, 700 Bank St. Suite 120, Wallace, ID. 83873 or e-mailed, with the elector’s signature scanned in, to swiller@co.shoshone.id.us.

Applications for an absentee ballot to be mailed must be received by the clerk’s office no later than 5:00 pm on October 28, 2022.

Absentee voting may also be done in person at the County Clerk’s office on the first floor of the courthouse between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Absentee ballots will be taken until Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.

In the event a registered elector is unable to vote in person at their designated polling place on the day of election because an emergency situation, rendered them physically unable, they may apply for an absent elector’s ballot on the day of the election by notifying the County Clerk. However, no person shall be entitled to vote under an emergency situation unless the situation claimed rendered them physically unable to vote at their designated polling place within 96 hours prior to the closing of the polls.

Please call the County Clerk’s office at (208)752-1264 if you have any questions.

Candidates can contact the News-Press at (208)752-1120 or by emailing local editor Josh McDonald at jmcdonald@shoshonenewspress.com.
