Silver Mountain hosts triathlon, updates season
KELLOGG — A sea of colorful spandex and athletic gear will descend upon Silver Mountain Resort for the 19th Annual Leadman Triathlon at the end of April.
This exciting race is for teams or individuals, combining skiing, biking and running for an all-out, intense race.
The race begins at Kellogg Peak on the mountain, with competitors running about 200 feet to click into their ski or boarding gear to the bike transition point. Competitors will then find their riding gear and mountain bikes braving the mostly downhill dirt hill seven miles to the city of Kellogg, where the four-mile running portion will take place, finishing at the Gondola Village of Silver Mountain Resort.
Over the years, the event has been used as a fundraiser for local groups, and more than $168,000 has been given out over the past 18 years. Last year’s triathlon raised $10,500, dispersing the funds to the Kellogg High School Class of 2026, KHS Band, KHS Girls Basketball, Silver Valley Cat Wranglers, Shoshone County Fire District No. 2, Pinehurst Elementary, Shoshone Pet Rescue, Kellogg Storm Football and the Shoshone Medical Center Foundation.
Registration for the race is open until April 18 at midnight, with a late fee for those who register from April 9-18 and is limited to the first 275 competitors and will close when the limit is reached.
Although spring is upon us, local ski season isn’t over for those who want to experience the popular Kellogg Mountain. Silver Mountain Resort received more than 70 inches of new snow in March, extending its 2022-23 winter skiing and boarding season, adding Sunday, April 23, and the next weekend, April 29 and 30, to the calendar.
“Our snowpack is in great shape for this time of year; the late season storms have really allowed us to keep the party going,” said General Manager Jeff Colburn. “We will also look to adding May 6 as an operations day, but will see how attendance and weather are before making the call.”
The mountain currently has all 78 trails open and plans to keep as many open through the rest of the reason as conditions allow. In addition, lodging, Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark, and the rental shop will be open Friday through Sunday.
The Leadman Triathlon will occur on April 22, with start times dependent on age, race and team/individual competitors.
