Mullan Golf

• April 10

PINEHURST — Stephen Paul and Izzy Groves of Kellogg won the Jack and Jill scramble portion of the tournament, leading the Wildcats to victory at the Mullan Invitational on Monday at Pinehurst Golf Course.

The tourney consisted of a team format, with each school eligible to enter a team in boys best ball, girls best ball, boys scramble, girls scramble and Jack and Jill scramble.

Each portion is scored 10-7-5-3-2-1, with those points going to the overall team score for each school.

“Coaches select the kids they want to play together,” Mullan coach and tournament director Paul Elston said. “The X factor is the Jack and Jill scramble, and that result has, more often than not, determined the winner.”

Kellogg edged St. Maries by two points to take home the traveling trophy.

Players from 11 schools participated.

This is the eighth year of the tournament — Elston has used this format for the last seven years to make it different from the usual strokeplay tourneys.

“The kids seem to like it, and that’s the important thing,” he said.
