'Let's flash back to the '70s'

Who will be the killer at the Silver Valley Chamber’s Disco Murder Mystery? Find out by playing along and solving the mystery while grooving at the Blue Raven Taphouse in Wallace on Sept. 9.

As a member of the Sixth Street Melodrama, Carol Roberts had initially started writing the story in 2020, but she had to take a long hiatus when the pandemic put an end to the production. When the fundraising event was confirmed to return this year, she started piecing the story together again.

“It’s been fun, it’s been a great little project to work on. One of the suspects performs at the 6th Street Melodrama, so we pulled in a lot of local places,” Roberts said.

Roberts will be playing club owner Jeannie De Rosa, based on the architect Eugene De Rosa, who designed the building that would eventually house Studio 54.

She wove a number of local lore and 1970s references into the names and plot for the story. Her husband, Paul Roberts, will be playing DJ Wolfguy Paul (a reference to Wolfman Jack), a Liza Minelli-esque character named Liza B'Damn, a John Travolta-like character named John Mullan, and an artistic character named Andy Pritchard who is based on Andy Warhol.

Dressing up is strongly encouraged for guests and disco dancing will be taking place throughout the evening. There are scenes scheduled throughout the evening where the suspects investigate the death and accuse each other. The most interesting part of the structure of the mystery is that only just before the final scene will the murderer receive the information that they committed the crime.

“I think it will be really interesting to go back to that disco era. We want everyone to try and figure out who did it in the end and get people involved,” Roberts said.

Radio Brewing is catering the event and Roberts said they have been researching food from the '70s. Participants can learn to do the bump or the hustle, and there might even be an appearance by “Richard Simmons” to warm up the crowd and get everyone exercising their bodies along with their minds.

Silver Valley First Vice President Juli Zook said she was thrilled to be able to welcome back the fundraiser to help the chamber promote local businesses and that everyone was welcome to put on a pair of bell bottoms and party on the dance floor at the Blue Raven.

“Let’s flash back to the '70s, babies, and rock it out,” Zook said.
