Silver Valley Sports Recap: Jan. 30 – Feb. 5
KELLOGG WRESTLING
Feb. 2
Kellogg 56, Timberlake 18
SPIRIT LAKE — Walking into a hostile environment was precisely what head coach Scott Miller wanted for his kids in their dual-finale of the year.
Seeing how they would respond in such an environment, just a few weeks before their district tournament – Miller got what he wanted.
“I thought our kids wrestled a very good match in a tough environment,” he said. “Timberlake has always been a very competitive match for us and our kids got themselves on a roll and turned a close match into a rout. We did a good job controlling pace and setting the tone for each match. It was a good way to end our dual season.”
Feb. 3-4 Conrad Garner Invitational
BONNERS FERRY — All season long, the Kellogg Wildcats have shown that they can hang with the big dogs of any classification and they proved again last weekend with a third-place finish at the Conrad Garner Invitational at Bonners Ferry High School.
Kolter Wood and Jayce Garcia brought home the championships in their respective weight class, while 13 other KHS wrestlers found their way to the podium.
“I thought our kids showed some really good things this weekend against some really good competition,” coach Scott Miller said. “We did a very good job in the consolation brackets and which resulted in a lot of placers for us. I think overall we did a really good job on pace in the match again as well as finding ways to score late in the matches. I'm pleased with where we are right now.”
Wood and Garcia have been dominant for the Wildcats this season, with Garcia picking up his second tournament championship of the season.
For Wood, his win was a bit of redemption from a loss he took at last year’s 3A state tournament.
“Kolter got a really big win in the finals against the South Fremont wrestler that beat him last year at state,” Miller said. “It just shows how far Kolter has come this year. I think he is definitely one of the top kids in the state at his weight.”
South Fremont — who won the tournament — presented several roadblocks for the Wildcat grapplers, including Garcia.
“Jayce had a great tournament and overwhelmed his opponent from South Fremont in the finals,” Miller said. “Jayce has really taken control of his match and is able to find ways to score no matter what position he is in. Just a great week for him.”
